The Champions League replaced another competition called the European Cup, to play in the European Cup you had to be the Champions of your domestic league or the current holder of the European Cup. It was a straight knock out competition.

The bigger teams didn't like this, as only one team could enter and if you were unlucky you'd get knocked out early, not a big enough money maker for the big teams who needed more money to pay higher wages and stockpile more players.

So they changed it to the Champions league, which ironically, you no longer needed to be champions to enter. Some Countries are restricted to 1 or 2 entries but the richer leagues have up to 4 places. Instead of a knock out, its made up of small groups of teams, so if the bigger clubs get an unlucky game where they play bad and a smaller team plays well, the group games mean the bigger team still has a chance to knock out the smaller team.

Basically its a competition born from the greed of certain European clubs.

There is no real salary cap in football which makes it a little unbalanced compared to American sports. There are regulations to prevent teams from spending more than they can afford when acquiring players from another team but in terms of contracts it's basically only Spain that has some sort of salary cap. For other leagues it's pretty much the wild west, a team like Manchester City which already have the highest wages in England could offer all their players the double what they already make.

Manchester City Champions League Winners! European Super Cup Champions! World Club Champions! And of course Premier League Champions of England!! Drink it up!!!!!!!!! All in 2023!!! Oh and did I mention the English FA Cup Winners 2023!!! 😂😂

also on the matter of copyright…
UEFA owns the Champions League and all rights related to it.. it licenses out the TV rights to Sky Sports (basically FOX Sports' European affiliate, but Murdoch had to call it Sky because the British didn't want the Premier League on a US network).. as well as DAZN and Amazon Prime for streaming..
the copyright claim N*zi is, of course, Sky Sports.. which is to say FOX Sports..
who pressure UEFA to claim footage because by US law FOX/Sky can't do it..

besides… the Champions League doesn't need marketing from/on YT.. it markets itself.. it's the Champions League..

FC Bayern Munich is the only big team not owned by rich investors.
VERY important missing information imo.
Because if you are sick and tired of oligarch and oil sheik owning sports, Bayern Munich is the obvious team to root for.

don't you worry, Good Ser..
enjoy your Gridiron.. Champions League is still in winter-break and will continue with the Round of 16 in a month or so..

and you don't have to explain Fantasy Sportsball to us Europeans.. we are very much aware what it is, because we have it for football, too.. in fact, we have it for every country and at least 2 league levels (divisions) deep, plus Champions League.. in all variations of Fantasy play..
and we're just as itchy as you, Ser.. for today is Transfer (Trade) Deadline Day ;)..

When I was 8 years old in London, in 1962,I was rudderless, no ambition or goals, nothing to live for * , no friends or even enemies. My Life was meaningless, Dullsville, Oklahoma and then I went to my first Football match in London which was Millwall 5 Hull City 1 and, miraculously,a whole new World opened up. I was Born again, refreshed, and have had 62 wonderful years and seen 10,000+ matches since, attending 1,770 games.
All because of THE BEAUTIFUL GAME. * I may, have, slightly exaggerated.😀

Thanks for this food reaction, EB:) To clarify. The Top teams from the PREVIOUS season go into the NEXT season's Champions League. In England(the World's most competitive league) it is The Top 4 and the teams finishing 5th and 6th enter the secondary but still prestigious EUROPA CUP. The team finishing 7th enters The European Conference League for a minor trophy. In The Champions League, they played in 8 Groups of 4 teams and THe Top 2 from each group qualify for the Knockout Stage where there are 8 2 legged games. The 8 become 4 become 2 and play in a single match Final. Man City won EVERYTHING last season including FINALLY this tournament plus 3 other trophies.

Not a great video but not the worst either, covers the basics but the guy obviously doesn't quite get football yet but he seems to be trying so I'll give him that. Man City are the only billionaire/state owned club to have that level of success because they cheated like hell for the first few years after they were taken over, literally they took the piss, and other similarly very rich clubs can't follow in their footsteps because they're held back by FFP (Financial Fair Play) regulations, which City simply ignored, they have 115 outstanding charges against them which is unprecedented, it's a Lance Armstrong level of cheating, they're due to face the charges in summer 2025, but their financial power might mean they get away with it, because of this they get very little actual respect from other English clubs, they have a great manager and players which I kind of feel sorry for, but at the same time don't. Pulisic is in Italy now, Chelsea have turned into a bit of a laughing stock, they were bought by Todd Boehly who's tried to buy them success overnight by spending a billion pounds on players in just one year… and they're currently sitting 10th in the league, it's pretty tragic, hilarious but tragic! You've done well choosing Liverpool, they've been ran on a shoestring budget for years which makes the team they have even more impressive, they're not rich but play the most exciting football to watch, it's a shame Klopp has announced he's leaving as it will be a huge loss for the premier league, but I think if they can replace him with Xabi Alonso things could work out ok, their style of football is incredible to watch.

Cool reaction, what's your view on the NFL being fixed?
Apparently given a yearly 'script' showing who will win, when players will be injured etc. The superbowl logo even shows the colours of the participating teams in advance. NBA is the same. Both are listed as entertainment, not sport.

If you do a deep dive into different Leagues, you should definitely look at the Scottish Premiership. There's a lot of history there with the obvious Mighty Glasgow Rangers and Celtic but also Aberdeen with Sir Alex Ferguson and Dundee United with Jim McLean.

Alan, Man City signed the Haaland kid and won the Champions League BUT they have 111 charges against them for corruption and will likely face a huge points deduction or even Relegation. Liverpool and Man United will always be the Traditional ELITE and greatest rivalry of the British Clubs.

Fun Fact about the CL Logo, it was create by a man called Phil Clements and The eight stars on the logo represent the eight top teams for the first-ever Champions League back in 1992.

Rangers, Marseille, AC Milan, IFK Goteborg, Club Brugge, Porto, CSKA Moscow and PSV Eindhoven

I wonder what happened to the creator of the badge, he's only managing Rangers one of the team included in the original design

It's called "World Champions" because the best in the world play it. We have cool tournaments here as well. You lose your American card for six months. NFL > SOCCER BOTTOM LINE! That being said we are gonna do a Premier League show coming up, just to explain, but you can completely eff off with soccer is better than football, no way bro😂😂😂 Wake me up when Premier League has a tailgate.

There has been talk for the last few years of a "Super League" going alone and cut themselves off the official organizers of the Champions League and the richest and best play each other though a couple of years ago the fans protested big time and the new Super League was postponed ,but there are rumblings that the big clubs have far from given up the idea. Perhaps the vast amounts of money in the Premier League is a double edged sword where the best are playing for massive wages but making even more cash is the paramount aim which is blind to common sense and good old fashion wisdom.

Many years ago, the Champions league was just that: the team that finished first, whether it was in the UK Premier League, Spain’s La Liga or Italy’s Seria A, was the champion, and was the only team from that countries league that could represent that country in the Champions League. Then, UEFA changed it (probably due to pressure by lesser but still important teams who were not getting the monetary riches the champions got!) UEFA’s new ruling was to allow the first 4 teams who finished the highest in their respective leagues to enter.

So, Man City in the English Premier league could finish in first place as champions, but the team that finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th (say Chelsea, Man United and Liverpool) would also get into the Champions league, which makes a mockery of the tournaments title, because there can only be one champion, so really, only one champion from each country’s top league should represent each country!

It’s all got to do with coefficients when a team wins in the champions league they earn points for their league and there’s a whole rankings system for the leagues so the higher up in those rankings the league is the more champions league places they get

Nice reaction as always! His premier league guide videos are great too. i highly suggest them, and if you want a more player focused video on an american talent, check out his video on Christian Pulisic. The title is "Look at how much Pulisic has Leveled Up in Italy"

Great Vid bud. Great to see how it peaked your interest into a more deep dive where you can form your own opinions on it while learning the history of the teams. I start my chemo tomorrow Al. Fingers crossed it'll buy me some time and won't be too harsh 🙂 All the best anyways and thanks for keeping me entertained whilst waiting hours for hosp transport hehe it's truly appreciated :D… well, you and quite a few other reaction channels tbh 🙂

😊when this tournament started, teams playing away from home ( on the road ) would play very defensive and not really play to win, which meant very boring games. So they came up with the idea in the case of a draw after 2 games, the team scoring the most away goals would go through to the next round of the knockout. This made teams try harder away from home.

video you were watching explaining
The joke that The Champions League has become was like watching
a car crash from a long distance away.

For a start, it's extremely dated that video so much has changed from then & will be changing next season in
the Champions League honestly that video is so out dated the vast majority of it is irrelevant
to the current situation as
regards
The Champions League.

The Champions League for a start is a joke it has not been a
Champions League
since I was a teenager
I am 42 now.

Next season
The Champions League is changing to two groups of
16 clubs using the Swiss
model that is you will
play 8 games but not the same club home & and
away as in on the road as
Americans would say.

For example
lets take
Liverpool
next season they might play
@ home
Red Bull Lipzig
P.S.G.
Athletico Madrid
Milan

But away they might play
F.C Porto
Bayern Munich
Benfica
Rosenberg

Whare as now you play the same clubs how & away this is a radical change.

This will make it close to impossible for clubs from
smaller countries to make it to the Champions League group stage
country's like Scotland , Austria, Belgium & Netherlands are going to find it next to impossible to actually get in
to the Champions League from next season.

It's becoming more & more about how has the money & how can they make more of it.

Manchester City won
the treble last season so all that about
Manchester City is irrelevant now.

Me I have been a massive fan of The N.F.L in particular since 1995
I am 42 now.
Steelers are my team alway have been always will be I bleed Pittsburgh
that's how much I love
The Steelers & The of
Pittsburgh come on
The Burgh.

Unlike what we call
Football in Europe
The N.F.L it's actually possible to go from worst to best if you go about it
properly.

Our football socks now but it was not always that way.

You should watch
a Video on
Archibald Leitch
if you can find one.

Yeah have a look into the 115 chargers for financial fair play hanging over Manchester City's head, as most English supporters will tell you there are many questions over how they have managed to spend so much money to build the teams they have , I myself am a Liverpool supporter but would say to anyone new to the game watch a few teams and support the one that you feel you connect with the most not just one of the big teams because of who they are.
