Arshavin Keen on La Liga Move

Zenit St. Petersburg forward and current star of Euro 2008 thus far, Andrei Arshavin is the man of the moment. Reports suggest that he is ready to try his trade outside of his native Russia, and he has received offers from England and Germany.

However Arshavin has stated that he is keen on a move to Spain, as he is a fan of the league, and he likes the way football is played there. Zenit boss Dick Advocaat, has also claimed in a recent interview that Arshavin is likely to join Barcelona.

Arshavin’s desire to play in Spain has now put a twist on the current Adebayor transfer saga as the Blaugrana may be tempted to make a move for the 27 year old instead. Arsenal have apparently been keen to land Arshavin and has been planning to use the funds from a possible Adebayor transfer, to buy the gifted striker while still having cash left over, having priced Adebayor at around 32 million euros, while Arshavin will cost in the region of 15 million euros. Barca however are only prepared to pay 27 million euros for the Togolese striker and thus could make a move for Arshavin instead.

My take on this, is that Barca should make a move for the man of the moment, Arshavin. He is a player who I believe many Barca fans would love to see at the Nou Camp, even more so than Emmanuel Adebayor. Also Arshavin has expressed a desire to move to Spain while Adebayor’s heart seems set on playing in Italy for AC Milan. Barcelona needs to bring players to the club who have a strong desire to play for the club and I believe Arshavin is one of them.

Russian football is clearly on the rise, it was proven with Zenit St. Petersburg’s Uefa Cup triumph over Rangers and now Russia’s run in Euro 2008. Arshavin believes they are many good players in is country which are now being discovered, and one thing is certain, he definitely is one of them.

Time to Learn Another Major Language or Two!

On Sunday, the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia reached a grand finale with France hoisting the coveted gold trophy after beating Croatia 4-2. And soon the new season of the English Premier League will kick off as are other leagues in Europe. For soccer lovers, these are exciting times!

What is of more interest to me though is how all the transnational players that ply their trade in these lucrative leagues communicate effectively. I mean how do their coaches manage to get the message across on the training field to all these players of different nationalities? Could it be that a player that speaks many languages has more chances for success in these cutthroat competitive leagues than those who don’t?

Multilingualism gives one an edge over others

Oh yes, multilingualism gives one an edge over others. Arsene Wenger who was at the helm of Arsenal FC for 22 years became hugely successful not only because of his coaching nous but also because of his ability to speak many languages. Monsieur Wenger speaks six languages fluently: French, English, Japanese, German, Italian and Spanish. This ability helped him to transmit his ideas clearly and easily to the players who could not speak English. For example, when he signed Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona in 2003, the latter didn’t speak or understand a word of English. Thus Wenger always interacted with him in Spanish. He also encouraged him to learn English and by the time Fabregas left the club, he was bilingual; very fluent in English and Spanish.

Wenger’s realization that the ability to speak many languages helps players to bond and understand the world and football philosophy better saw him advocate for language learning in Arsenal’s youth setup. The benefits from this quickly spilled over so much that everyone knows about the «Arsenal way», which is basically about Arsenal’s synergy; Arsenal players having a bond akin to one close family as well allowing their feet to speak a language of their own on the field by playing quick, beautiful and aesthetic football that is hard to imitate.

Also the fact that football managers and players that are multilingual have been hugely successful wherever they have plied their trade shows that speaking many languages is a huge plus. For example, Pep Guardiola who has been very successful in Spain, Germany and England as a manager speaks German, English, Catalan, Spanish and Italian. Jose Mourinho who is also one of the most successful football managers speaks Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian and English fluently.

Cristiano Ronaldo who has four times won the Fifa Ballon d’Or as the best player in the world speaks Portuguese, Spanish and English, whereas Manchester United star Romelu Lukaku who was born in Belgium but has Congolese roots is fluent in six languages: Dutch, French, English, Spanish, Portuguese and Swahili.

All these coaches and players are hugely successful because their ability to speak many languages helps them to easily receive and internalize messages. It gives them that extra edge and boosts their confidence. They can easily settle into many geographical realms and feel at home, thanks to their ability to easily interact with the natives of those areas.

As people continue to intermarry and travel, being multilingual becomes a necessary skill that comes with many opportunities. Moreover, many countries today have more than one official national language, thus those unable to communicate in at least two or more major languages such as English, Chinese, Spanish, Arabic or Hindi, will soon be left behind in a world that gets more complex and competitive with every passing day. However, translation companies have also kicked in to save the day with services like Somali translation services, Yoruba translation Services, Malagasy translation services, Africa Conference Interpreters among many others.

How Are Premier League TV Rights Assigned?

With Setanta Sports seemingly fighting a losing battle against the economic downturn, what does it all mean for the distribution of the Premier League’s live UK television rights in the coming seasons?

At present, live Barclays Premier League TV rights are split into six packages, each consisting of 23 live matches. Therefore a total of 138 games from the league will be screened live on UK TV every season.

For the forthcoming 2009-10 season, BSkyB owns the rights for four of the six packages available, meaning that the British broadcaster will show 92 live matches next season.

The distribution of Live Premier League TV Rights:

2009-10 season

– BSkyB will show 92 live EPL matches

– New ESPN channel will show 46 live games

From 2010-11 season until 2013

– BSkyB will show 115 live EPL matches

– New ESPN channel will show the remaining 23 live games

The remaining two packages of 46 games, that Setanta was forced to surrender after failing to come up with the cash, were snapped up this week by Disney-owned American broadcaster, ESPN.

ESPN, who currently broadcast two channels on UK satellite television, are expected to announce the launch of a new channel to screen the newly-acquired live matches, that consumers will be able to purchase on top of their current Sky TV subscription.

The American media company is also expected to look to broadcast their new channel on other TV platforms such as Virgin Media.

But after the conclusion of the 2009-10 season, Sky will tighten its grip on the live games after it emerged that the company has already won an auction for another 23 match package, bringing the total number of live games on Sky to a hefty 115. Meanwhile, ESPN will show the remaining 23 games on its newly branded channel from 2010-11.

Finally, whilst one might assume that Setanta’s demise is in Sky’s favour, it could in fact be bad news for Rupert Murdoch’s company. Industry regulators demand that there must be a direct competitor to Sky as no single broadcaster are able to own all six packages.

This deal was agreed in 2005 with the European Commission, when it was ruled that Premier League television rights must be split between more than one broadcaster.

A Tale Of 2 Football Cities

It has been a season to forget for both teams with only domestic cup success to show for a miserable season that might turn out to be real disasters for both teams.

With the players that both teams possess most especially Valencia it is incredible that they are in this kind of position but after watching them last night against Bilbao, it seemed that some of the players were not interested and also manager Ronald Koeman continues to make disastrous decisions.

His starting 11 left a lot to be desired as he decided to leave Ever Banega, Fernando Morientes, Joachim on then bench whilst playing Carlos Marchena in midfield and persisting with Arizmendi and Hedwiges Maduro.

Quite what has become of PSG is indeed baffling as most people thought they would get over their recent funk with the appointment of Paul Le Guen but as it turns out the heady days of being Lyon manager are long gone and the more confusing mismanagement style we saw at Glasgow Rangers is the Le Guen that has come to the fore.

It has been nothing short of disastrous for both Le Guen and PSG as their chronic lack of goal scoring and incoherent displays have dogged them all season in the league but remarkably not in cup competitions.

As for Koeman, he came into a volatile situation with an internal tug-of-war between some of the top players Miguel Angulo, David Albelda and Santiago Canizares against management with Koeman asked to not only drop the 3 players but to disassociate them from the club completely.

This understandably did not go down well with everyone and the squad seems to be divided. What seems to be apparent is that the players feel they cannot be relegated and as long as they are not mathematically relegated, they would not try very hard for the manager as it seems they are capable of raising their game when they want to like the recent victory at Real Madrid in the league and the triumph in the cup showed where they defeated Barcelona along the way where they beat Getafe by 3-1 just last Wednesday.

They say no side is too good to go down and Paris St Germain as well as Valencia are about to find out if they are not extremely careful.
