Champions League – Manchester United Have Advantage Over Chelsea

Manchester United took a huge advantage in the first leg of the Champions League quarter final match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Wayne Rooney’s goal was enough to give the Reds a 1-0 win and a crucial away win, which puts United in a strong position to qualify for the semi final stage against Inter Milan or more than likely German side Schalke 04 who lead Milan 5-2 following their first quarter final game.

Rooney scored in the 24th minute following a sublime move involving Michael Carrick and Reds veteran Ryan Giggs, which will leave the Blues with the daunting task of securing a victory at Old Trafford in order to pursue their dream of the elusive Champions League Trophy.

Chelsea chose a strike partnership of Didier Drogba and £50million pound striker Fernando Torres, who is yet to score a goal in a Chelsea shirt. Drogba hit the United post moments before half time and a scuffed shot from Frank Lampard was cleared off the line as the Blues searched in vein for an equalising goal.

Chelsea were frustrated again late in the second half when they had two penalty claims turned down, firstly Ramires was sent clattering to the ground with a crude challenge from Patrice Evra, which would have seen him clear on goal and then moments later Torres claimed to have been fouled, but only received a yellow card for his efforts as the referee adjudged him to have dived.

United were given a huge boost before the game with the return of Rio Ferdinand, who made his first appearance for two months, the Reds were resilient from the outset, strong and well organised in defence while continually looking to catch Chelsea on the counter attack. Edwin van der Sar made fine saves from a Drogba shot in the first half and from a Torres header in the final minutes, showing an agility and alertness that belied his age, in what is proclaimed to be his final season at United.

Chelsea made the brighter start to the game, although it was United who scored the all important goal, a pin point, long range pass from found Ryan Giggs who skipped past Bosingwa and neatly pulled the ball for an unmarked Rooney to fire a low shot past Cech in the Chelsea goal and in off the post, the celebrations were somewhat muted compared with his foul mouthed accolade at West Ham, which now sees Rooney face a two match domestic ban.

The Blues huffed and puffed during the second half, but rarely threatened to score and at times they looked lacklustre in attack, the penalty decision for the foul on Ramires could be prove to be crucial in this tie, as replays appeared to show he was clearly fouled, but even the extra assistant behind the goal, employed for Champions League games, who probably had the best view of anyone in the ground, stood motionless, as he could obviously see no wrong in the challenge.

Victory at Old Trafford will be a huge task for Chelsea, but victory is not a formality for Manchester United either, the Blues probably have one of the best records of any team at Old Trafford in recent years, including a crucial 2-1 victory last season which ultimately saw Chelsea go onto win the Premier League.

Introduction to the Universiade

FISU is an international university sports Federation that organizes Universiade which is an international sports event. This event comprises three primary competitions that include the world University championships, the Winter Universiade, and the summer Universiade. Let’s find out more about Universiade.

At the beginning of the 1920s, the planning for the Universiade was initiated. By the end of 1923, in Paris, the world University Sports Congress was organized. During this event, Congress had a meeting and decided to organise the International Universities’ games for the first time the next year.

The next year, the international universities’ games were organized for the first time in Warsaw. And this included three events namely fencing, swimming, field and track. However, the Games was organised every now and then. By the end of 1939, 8 sessions were held in total.

After 1939, the game was not organized because of World War 2. Once again, the games were resumed after 8 years in 1947. Since 1951, things changed on the international level, which resulted in the division of games into the west and the East.

In the west, the event was named International Student Sports Games. On the other hand, it was named Youth Student Sports Games, in the East. It is important to note that each camp had its own games.

First Event

In Italy, the first Universiade was organized in 1959. From more than 40 countries, 985 athletics took part in the games. Since then, the event had been organised every couple of years. Interestingly enough, the Universiade had been organised 20 times by 1999.

Officially, the competition included many games such as volleyball, basketball, tennis, fencing, gymnastics, water polo, diving swimming, and track and field. However, the host country had the liberty to add more games. For instance, Bulgaria decided to include wrestling to the list of games. Similarly, Mexico included football and Japan included judo.

The Development Process

In Chamonix, France, the winter Universiade was organized in 1960. In the beginning, the Winter Universiade and the Summer Universiade were organised every couple of years. However, they have been organised on an annual basis since 1981.

By 1999, there had been 19 sessions of the Winter Universiade. They included a lot of games such as Snowboarding, Nordic Biathlon, ice Hockey, winter biathlon, platform skiing, Cross Country skiing, alpine skiing, figure skating, track speed skating, and speed skating, just to name a few.

The Participation of China

During the first Universiade, China took part in some of the track and field games in 1959. For the next couple of years, china decided not to send any delegation. However, China was a full member of the organization in 1975. Since 1977, china has been part of the university events.

Popularity

Since the Universiade is the largest comprehensive sports event after the Olympics, it is popular all over the world as far as importance is concerned. Therefore, it has been rising in popularity since 1959. And great athletes have been taking part in these sports from different countries of the world.

Since 1960, athletes have broken 18 world records in swimming and track and field. These World Records were set in summer universities.

So this was an introduction to the Universiade. Hope you enjoyed reading this article.

Spanish League Soccer – Coach Ziganda No More With Osasuna Team

The former footballer of 42 years old, Coach Jose Angel Ziganda, was dismissed by the Osasuna team of the Spanish League this past October 13th due to the results the team has been having at the beginning of this season.

The team is relegated to the 16th position of the 20 teams in the league, with only 4 points on the first six games of the season. The team had 4 tied games with Villarreal, Mallorca, Deportivo and Numancia, and had 2 losses against Valencia and Racing. With these results and the close the team ended to relegation last season, the franchise of Osasuna decided that it was time for coach Ziganda to leave the club.

The news of his release took Jose Ziganda and his assistant coach Andoni Goikoetxea by surprise, but they do accept that the results were not the best for the club. The fact that surprise them the most was that Ziganda became the first coach in 11 and half years to be fired by the club, because in the past, the franchise did not seemed to be focusing on the results. But now the expectations of the franchise are higher as they want to get out of the last positions of the table and be a more remarkable team in the league.

Ziganda expressed that he is leaving the club a little heartrending because he wanted more time to improve the team results and get the best performances of every player, but he accepts that he didn’t managed to win and that the team needed points. »We are very sad but we have to accept it, the reasons are obvious, we have not managed to win and the team needed a change. We wanted more time, because I think that the team has been capable of winning all the games, but the club want results,» expressed Coach Ziganda.

Jose Angel Ziganda was in charge of Osasuna for two seasons, replacing the Mexican coach Jose Aguirre. In his first season 2006-07, Ziganda took the team to the 14th place of the league and leaded them into the 2007 semifinals of the UEFA Cup, which they lost against Sevilla 2-1. However, for the 2007-08 season, Ziganda left Osasuna at the 17th place and very close to relegation. Although the club directives meant to keep him for another year, giving him the chance to turn things around, but the results obtained so far were not different.

The club has acknowledged the press that Coach Jose Antonio Camacho will replace Ziganda; he already signed a contract with Osasuna until June 2009. Camacho was the coach of the Spanish national team between 1998 and 2002, guiding the team to the quarter-finals of both Euro 2000 and World Cup2002. He also coached the teams Espanyol, Rayo Vallecano, SL Benfica and was in charge of Real Madrid for two brief spells; 22 days in 1998 and four months in 2004. More recently, in 2008, Camacho was coaching Benfica again, but after some issues with the club, he decided to leave them. Now his expectations are placed on Osasuna, since he wants to take them out of the last positions of the table and convert them in a successful club in La Liga.
