Barcelona FC of Spain Wednesday night drew 2-2 against Arsenal FC of England at the Emirates stadium in the 1st leg quarter final match of the UEFA Champions league. The match saw 4 goals scored in the 2nd half after a goalless 1st half.

Barcelona clearly dominated the first half of the match having over 15 shots at goal while Arsenal had less than 5. Ball possession was 70% to 30% in favour of Barca. They controlled every department of the game, dazzled the fans to a delightful football, had several shots at goal but no goal came. The host managed to contain the visitors for the whole of the first half.

Second half resumed with more hostility from Barcelona leading to their first goal in the first minute through Ibrahimovic who did a solo run and lobbied the ball over an on-rushing Arsenal goal keeper. The pressure continued; and this paid off again for Barcelona in the 59th minute as Ibrahimovic made it two for the visitors following a defensive blunder by Alexander Song. The bombardment continued but no more goals came.

Arsene Wenger made an intelligent change, bringing in Walcott to replace Sagna in the 65th minute. Barely 4 minutes after he came in Walcott pulled one back for Arsenal in the 69th minute through a pass from Bendtner. Thereafter Arsenal whose ball possession had improved slightly to 40% began to regain more confidence. They continued to play with determination and in the 84th Cecs Fabregas was fowled by Puyol in the penalty box leading to his being red-carded by the centre referee. The resultant penalty was neatly converted by Cecs Fabregas for Arsenal’s equalizing goal.

Yellow cards were awarded to some players from both sides, notably Emmanuel Eboue, Cecs Fabregas, Abou Diaby, and Puyol received a red card which makes him ineligible for the return leg match in Spain. Fabregas had also limped off the pitch casting doubts on his ability to play their next match.

Barcelona got 2 vital away goals and Arsenal was lucky enough not to have conceded defeat at home. Arsene Wenger was visibly happy at the sound of the final whistle signaling the end of the pulsating encounter. His lads did not loose the match after all. They still have hope in the second leg match which comes up in a forth night. the next encounter promises to be much more explosive.

La Liga refers to the first division Spanish League. The top professional football league in Spain is officially called as Liga BBVA for the reason of sponsorship. It is one of the most professional and exciting leagues in Europe, attracting some best football talents from all over the globe.

Just like any other leagues, La Liga is also guided by some strict rules and regulations regarding promotional and relegation of the clubs as well as how many non-EU players can play in the league. Let us take a quick glance over the La Liga rules.

Rules of Promotion-Relegation

Every year, 20 teams take part in the competition. The three teams finishing at the bottom of the league table are relegated to the 2nd division of the Spanish league system, with the top two rankers in the immediately lower division and the winner in a play-off replacing the relegated clubs.

Inclusion of Non-EU Players

There is an upper cap in regards to retaining of non-EU players in this top-most division of Spanish league. In La Liga, every team is allowed to retain a maximum of three offshore players. Even in the second division, each participating clubs can keep hold of only 2 players. If any La Liga club is relegated to the lower division, it is allowed to keep hold of the same number of foreign players until their contracts are expired.

What does it mean by «Non-EU»? The phrase has been repeated many times following several verdicts from the European Court of Justice. According to a decision adopted by the Spanish Federation in this regard, the participating La Liga teams are entitled to make the best use of the rules and bring many foreign players to their squad.

Claim of Citizenship

The foreign players are allowed to apply for Spanish citizenship from the countries where their ancestors descended from. In La Liga, a non-EU player can claim for Spanish Citizenship if he has played in Spain for at least, five years and it may result into triple citizenship. Let us give you an example. Leo Franco was born in Argentina and has Italian ancestry. He is capable of applying for Spain citizenship, having played in the country for more than five years.

The players arriving from the ACP countries including Africa, the Caribbean and Pacific, are not considered against the Non-EU category as per the Kolpak ruling.

Breach of Rules & Conduct

All the La Liga clubs are required to abide by the rules and regulations as clearly specified by the highest authority in the Spanish football league system that, in turn, ensures compatibility with the guidelines made by FIFA, the governing body of football in the world. In recent times, Barcelona have been handed punishment by FIFA for failing to conform to the rules regarding transfer of the players after allegation of transfer of the under-age players (below 18).

The defending La Liga champions are not allowed to play any new player until January of 2016. The club applied against the ban but it was not lifted. However, they have been allowed to sell players during the time of transfer ban.

Finally, if Port Aventura is not your style, or you are simply after a slower change of pace, don’t miss out on a visit to the nostalgic Tibidabo a one hundred year old funfair that boasts some of the best views of the city. The park is packed with delightful amusement park offerings, including the must-ride funicular railway. While Tibidabo’s rides are reasonably tame compared to Port Aventura, there is something about the charm and historical importance of this park that makes it a firm favorite among children.

On May 28th 2011 the World’s ‘best’ team, Barcelona, travel to Wembley Stadium in London to take on the power of Manchester United. Lionel Messi has scored 52 goals so far this season in all competitions – that, by anyone’s standards is amazing and will be giving Alex Ferguson and his players countless sleepless nights.

Manchester United’s form has gathered pace as the season has progressed. After a slow start, with a number of draws against lower table sides, they have established themselves at the summit of the Premier League table going into the remaining 3 games of the season. They face a massive test against title rivals Chelsea on Sunday 08th May at Old Trafford. Should they win or draw that match they will be highly likely to win the Premier League title, which would see them surpass Liverpool’s record for the most league titles.

In Wayne Rooney and Hernandez United have two strikers in red hot form. So much so that they are keeping top scorer Berbatov on the sidelines. It will be interesting to see how Alex Ferguson addresses Barcelona’s midfield masters in the final. I expect him to pack the midfield with five players, and play Rooney alone upfront. That may mean Hernandez is limited to a cameo role.

This game has all the ingredients to go down as one of the greatest ever Champions League Finals. Will Manchester United gain revenge for the mauling they received in the 2009 Final, or will Fergie mastermind a victory over the seemingly unplayable Messi and Co? Come the 28th May 2011 and all will be revealed on the magnificent Wembley pitch. I for one can’t wait!
