Next Stop Premier League?

With the World Cup now having been and gone we could have expected an influx of summer performers to the Premier League clubs as has happened following recent World Cups and European Championships. This summer though, movement has been slow. The highest profile move to a Premier League club thus far was the recent announcement that Chelsea’s Joe Cole is transferring to Liverpool. Whilst Cole fits the criteria of a World Cup performer this move was likely to have been initiated before the World Cup and based on reputation rather than World Cup matches.

The financial climate of the Premier League has changed considerably with public records of large leveraged debt at Manchester United and Liverpool, Arsenal have never been traditional big spenders under manager Arsene Wenger and the situation at Chelsea is uncertain but it is clear that Roman Abramovich has slowed his spending in the last two seasons. This leaves Manchester city has the obvious candidates to spend big on World Cup stars whilst Spurs may want to consolidate there new standing as a top four side with some new faces.

With many of the fancied players (Kaka, Messi, Drogba, Rooney, Ronaldo) relatively under performing this summer the World Cup the hottest property is Germany’s Mesut Ozil. The speedy 21 year old is contracted to Bundesliga side Werder Bremen. With Michael Ballack gone from the Chelsea midfield they may see his replacement at International level this summer as the man to fill the gap at Stamford Bridge, however Chelsea interest in a player is likely to stir attention at Manchester City who have so far spent big money on Spain’s David Silva, Germany’s Jerome Boateng and Ivory Coasts Yaya Toure. However Ozil is likely to attract interest from mainland Europe too. Whilst he may not fit into the Barcelona midfield with their interest firmly on Fabregas he may be a target for fellow giants Real Madrid or closer to home Bayern Munich.

Uruguay surprised many this summer with the stand out performers being strikers Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan. Forlan is tried and tested in the Premier League when he found life tough to cope with at Manchester United scoring just 17 goals in near 100 appearances, he may get a second chance with another club if he can be tempted to leave the Spanish league that seems to suit his style of play. Suarez netted a phenomenal 49 goals for Dutch side Ajax and should Ajax manager Martin Jol make the rumoured switch to Fulham then don’t be surprised to see his star striker follow him to Craven Cottage.

World Cup’s gone by have been an opportunity for African players to showcase their talents to the watching football world, however this time around with the exception of Ghana, African performances were subdued so a minority of players are likely to have stirred Premier League interest. Of course, a large majority of Ghana’s squad already feature in European leagues so are likely to carry the inflated price tags that has Premier League chairman running scared of.

So to conclude, a slow start to the transfer window (with the obvious exception of Manchester City) and don’t expect things to change too quickly, it is likely to be a pre-season of consolidation and looking within teams own youth ranks rather than a vast period of recruitment.

FC Barcelona Players – Eider Gudjohnsen

Eidur Gudjohnsen, of course, is the answer to a well-known quiz question.   Who was the first player to come on as a substitute for his own father in an international football match?   What might be even more amazing is that it could happen again in a few years – Eidur’s son was one of the star players in the annual televised schoolboys tournament in the summer of 2008, captaining the Barcelona team.

Born in Reykjavik in 1978, Eidur Gudjohnsen was clearly always going to be a footballer and made his debut in the Icelandic League when he was only 16 years of age.   After just 17 games for his club Valur, the player had done enough to earn a transfer to Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven.   During his 2 seasons in Holland, however, Eidur suffered numerous injuries and was only able to complete 13 games before being transferred back to Iceland – to KR Reykjavik.

Barely had he signed, though, before he was off on his travels again – this time to England and, after a short trial, to Bolton Wanderers.   It was his success here, mainly as a bustling and determined centre forward, that brought a move to Chelsea, where he was to stay for 6 seasons. During this spell at Stamford Bridge, Gudjohnsen made a total of 268 first team appearances, scoring 78 goals.

Although originally a centre forward, Eidur always demonstrated what pundits insisted on calling ‘a surprisingly good touch for a big man’. Technically gifted, with very quick feet and, crucially, a nimble brain, the Chelsea fans warmed to the big Icelander because of his remarkable versatility.   Able to play up front, in midfield, or even on the wings, Eidur was part of the developing Chelsea team that won the league in 2005 and 2006 and the Carling Cup in 2005.

Many people were surprised when Eidur signed for Barcelona in the summer of 2006, especially when it appeared he was being seen as a direct replacement for the huge fans’ favourite, Henrik Larsen.   Initially played as a striker, he certainly had problems winning over the Barça faithful and, in his first season, a return of just 5 goals in 25 league games led to questions being asked about the player’s suitability for La Liga.

One thing that Eidur Gudjohnsen has always been, though, is determined and that played a big part in his ability to turn the difficult situation around.   By being used more in midfield, the player demonstrated his adaptability and consequently, in both 2006/07 and 2007/08, he became an important member of the squad.   Able to play in a variety of positions, and always liable to come up with a goal, Eidur Gudjohnsen is now an established Barcelona player and one whom the fans now trust totally.

Iceland’s record goal scorer, and with over 50 international caps already, and captain of the national team, Gudjohnsen has been Icelandic Player of the year three times.   It is a good bet that he will try to keep his place in the national squad until he’s able to play in the same team as his son. Now that would be a good quiz question.

Ikechukwu Uche – The Little Striker With a Big Heart

Ikechukwu Uche began is humble football career with local outfit- Amanze United F.C of Aba, before teaming up with division one outfit- Iwuanyanwu Nationale F.C of Owerri in Imo State eastern Nigeria. He is a natural striker with an eye for beautiful goals.

Born in 1984 in the industrial city of Aba, he grew up to love the round leather game as a youngster and the passion for soccer took him out of the shore of Nigeria in 2001, when he signed his first professional soccer contract with second division Spanish outfit-Racing de Ferrol at a tender age of 17.

His dribbling skills and clinical finish in front of goals earned him a move from the modest Racing de Ferrol to Recreativo de Huelva. He played some of his best football at Recreativo during the 2003-2007 football season appearing for them 133 times and scoring a whopping 50 goals in the process.

Uche later joined Getafe F.C at the end of the 2007 season after helping Recreativo into the Spanish top-flight league. It was however not an eventful beginning for the 1.7m tall Uche who was mostly used as a substitute during his time at Getafe.

His stay at Getafe soon ended in 2009 when Real Zaragoza offered the petite striker with a mouth-watering four years deal which saw him becoming one of their star-striker. It was a sad beginning for Uche at his new club when he sustained a horrifying knee injury while starring for his new club in his second game against Sevilla F.C.

He ended up on the side-line for 8 months recuperating and undergoing rehabilitation before suffering another knee injury in the 2010/11 season. It was a trying period for the Nigerian striker who was desperate to impress for both club and country. Uche who had before his injury woes formed a deadly strike-force with Kalu Uche (elder brother), missed the 2010 FIFA World Cup hosted by South Africa as a result of injury concern.

Before his injury spell, he was a super-regular with the Super Eagles of Nigeria and had featured in 22 games of the senior national team netting a total of 5 goals in the process. He is one of the most talented strikers in the present Super Eagles fold with good dribbling skill, ball control and strong aerial strength. He can use both legs when going on the offensive, an added advantage considering the fact that some strikers are one-footed.

As Nigeria engages the Ethiopian National team in a crucial African Nations Cup encounter slated for the Abuja National stadium on the 27th of March 2011, there are already agitations from Nigerian soccer-loving fans for Coach Samson Siasia to include the dynamic striker in the squad to face the Ethiopians as he has gradually worked his way back to match-fitness.
