Yes, the world is in the throes of football fever. The 2010 FIFA (International Federation of Association Football) World Cup football, which wows the globe every four years is now in its quarter final stage and all bets are on to see who will capture this year’s final cup. Will the indomitable Germans beat the resilient Argentineans or, will the Netherlands score an upset? World Cup Football is hands down, the greatest and most highly anticipated sporting event of all time. Two hundred and four nations tried to qualify for thirty two spots, with the U.S. qualifying for the first time in decades. The 2006 final match between Italy and France was watched by an estimated 715 million. With shifting demographics and 21st century technology rendering borders nearly obsolete, this year’s tally is anyone’s guess. Aficionados pour into stadiums, huddle around television sets, with gladiator-like fervor. Histories are invoked, wars waged, players pilloried and publicly chastised. Allegiances for players and countries are drawn in stone with blood and sweat.

It is known universally as, «the beautiful game,» for its elegant simplicity, the divinely appointed athletic prowess of its players and its appeal to the common man. The skill of the play, the passion and the enduring love for the game creates a brotherhood that transcends the sport. The unparalleled high and mindless exhilaration of GOOOOOAAAL! Much like basketball, it elevates its gifted players to god-like status, while simultaneously connecting them with the mortals who live vicariously through them. More than any other sport, football is a great equalizer. Because not mere color of skin, or nationality or Club can dictate ability or greatness. It simply is. A boy from a favela of Brazil with a devastating strike or from an obscure village in Côte d’Ivoire can become a striker for a world-class English Club. A good number come from exceedingly difficult circumstances, where pulling yourself up by the bootstraps often means borrowing a pair of cleats and heading to a game on a dusty bowl. Today’s black football players who hail from far-flung countries to play for European Clubs such as Inter Milan, Barcelona and Manchester United. But for World Cup, they return to play only for their national team. This is not to say that racism in football is not a serious issue. Taunts and behavior of fans can be unspeakably ugly, cruel and primitive, coming as it does from a contingent that remains stubbornly ignorant and primitive. That players consistently rise above it is a testament to their personal strength and integrity. The game has become a way of life that can change the trajectory of lives and communities. Stunning paychecks are often accompanied by lofty commercial endorsement from Nike, Gillette, and others. Players share their good fortune, donating substantial amounts to build hospitals, schools, and life-saving social service programs.

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa is the first played on the continent of Africa and has the potential to shift global perceptions on a number of levels. From the Africa Cup of Nations to 2010 World Cup, footballers of African descent and nationality have put the world on notice: they are a force with which to be reckoned. Just ask Team USA.

And no self-respecting football fan ever calls it soccer. It’s football, now and always.

Drogba came to prominence as one of the world’s foremost strikers in 2006 when he won the league title with Chelsea and captained the national team for the first time. In the 2006 World Cup he scored Côte d’Ivoire’s first ever goal of the competition and was chosen the 2006 African Footballer of the Year. He is the only player to score in six English cup finals.

But much of this pales in comparison to his humanitarian work for his country. After Côte d’Ivoire qualified for the 2006 World Cup, Drogba pleaded for a ceasefire between the combatants of his country’s deadly 5 year civil war, which was honored shortly after. In 2007, he was appointed Goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and donated his $4.5 million signing on fee for his endorsement of Pepsi towards the construction of a hospital in his hometown of Abidjan.

Maicon Douglas Sisenando

Country: Brazil

I am worrying about Liverpool way in UEFA Champion’s League. We had a lot of mistakes in defensive system, and we also had a terrible attacking system. We were in pressure at Stamford Brige atmosphere. At first, We believed that we can control the game but our players did not go the way we thought it was going to be. We often passed the ball into Chelsea’s possession. Chelsea’s inspiration is the key of the change, their fan’s voice was surrounded them.

Until about 29th minutes, when Chelsea’s defender Cavalho intercepted from Liverpool while they were attacking Chelsea. He passed the ball through Liverpool’s midfielder and defender to Didier Drogba. Drogba was too strong for Daniel Agger, so he passed the ball to penalty’s area assisted Joe Cole who was running from his side to scored this goal. Chelsea chelsea often didn’t miss the chance they had. They were punished Liverpool with this goal.

After that, the Red Machine started to work but they still had many mistake the both attacking and defending. Rafael Benitez, Liverpool’s manager sent Jermaine Pennant to the pitch but it was too late to change anything. Chelsea was seems like satisfied this score. That was decrease Liverpool’s chance to score because they step backward to his side for just defending Liverpool.

It could be a hard work for everyone in Liverpool’s team in the next game at Anfield. I hope Rafael Benitez could not have a mistake on the squad like the previous game. I want to see Liverpool in the final round.

Be unscrupulous on yourself. The results you have envisaged are so fundamental that you cannot imagine the opposite, namely failure. The universe will never disappoint you. It gives you back what you give it. So, do not give it ego poison, but ego food. It will take care of you. Be consistent in executing all the logical steps you have either identified or are given by practice for you to achieve the set goals. Be consistent at all times. Do not find yourself being caught in debating with yourself as to whether you must wake up or sleep longer, or wanting to delay implementation of the action to the following day. Do what is due today, for tomorrow has its own activities, and deserve your full capacity and full attention.

Repetition: as you pursue your life and/or professional goals, you will commit mistakes and disappoint yourself. This is how we learn in life. You must never be too critical to yourself to an extent that you are discouraged from trying again. I grew up in Jane Furse, in Sekhukhune Region, in Limpopo Province, South Africa. There is this football club at Ga-Sekwati Mampuru village, called Sekwati Try Again FC. I like them very much because their name is very motivational. Life is about repetition and trying again. If you fail in doing something, you must try again. You grow from your mistakes. All what you need is positive attitude and self drive to try again. I think it is Jimmy Cliff that sung the song, Second Time Around. There is always second time and many more times in life. We must take the opportunity to try again, and take second time opportunity. Sekwati Try Again FC was a very good football club. They never gave up. You win against them, they will be coming for you next time. They would have studied the previous game, identified your strength, and their weaknesses, and figured out how to approach the game second time around. This time round, they will beat you satisfactorily. So, repetition is the master of success.

Staying Power: success in life depends on your stamina, i.e. your staying power, tenacity and drive to hang on. Nothing come easy in life. You better get used to the practice of staying on course until the end of the journey. I have never heard of anyone that was killed by persistence. What kills people is the dislike of their work and problems that are caused by fellow human beings at the work places. It is also caused by our inability to deal with the complexity that is brought by fellow human beings, or our attitude toward it. So, you must have staying power. Never take problems personal. Otherwise, that is what will cause you stress and ultimately kill you. Be on the rational mind at all times. Do not be emotional about the challenges and problems brought to you by your colleagues, managers, leaders, and/or subordinates. Be aware of the language that your superiors are using when they are engaging with you. Respond to them using the same language they are using. If they are using the language of command or instructions get it right first time and respond accordingly. Do not respond with the language of emotions, for it will irritate them and they will view you as a cry baby and spoiled rat. If they are using the language of facts, make sure that yo get the facts and stick to them. If they use the language of reason, make sure that you get the rationale why they communicate the way they communicate with you. So, be always aligned with your leaders, colleagues and stakeholders language of communication. So, your staying power is not only physical, but emotional and mental as well. You can condition yourself accordingly.

Hard Work: at the end of all, it is about working hard. This does not suggest that your life must stop, no. You must just understand that every action requires a bit of a push if you want to be better than others. Nothing can beat hard work, especially if hard work is accompanied by creativity, innovation, and smartness. We must love what we do. We must condition ourselves to plough and invest first before we can harvest. Once we find ourselves wanting to harvest where we have not ploughed, we are on a dangerous road, that will lead to self-destruction. It is beautiful to reap the fruits of our sweat. You enjoy such fruits without any guilt.

So, work ethic according to the above input, is about consistency, repetition, stamina (staying power), and hard work. Nothing less, nothing more. You must develop work ethic to achieve success. That is the winning formula. Of course your natural talent come in handy at all times. But as John Maxwell wrote in his book: Talent is not Enough, indeed talent is not enough. It requires the right personality, attitude, hard work, determination, etc.

The Liberia Football Association keeps creating the avenues for more whipping of our various national teams. Over the weekend, the senior and Under-23 national teams suffered heavy defeats in two international football competitions.

In the qualifiers of the African Cup of Nations, the senior Lone Star went down 2-4 to Cape Verde on Saturday, March 26. Another disgrace for Liberian football was on Sunday, March 27 when the Under-23 sustained a humiliating defeat at the legs of the Under-23 of the Ivory Coast in Accra in the London 2012 Olympic qualifiers.

Liberia was walloped 0-4 by the Ivoirians. The country conceded a total of eight goals in two days in two international matches. Such horrific football image for Liberia could only be attributed to the inability of the current administration of the Liberia Football Association or LFA headed by Musa Bility.

Our football authority failed to plan and prepare because they had nothing to prepare, so they had nothing to implements as a nation on Saturday March 26 and Sunday, March 27, 2011 in Cape Verde and Ghana.

The road to London 2012 for Liberia has received numerous setbacks before the final one against Ivory Coast after full time.

Lone Star Under-23 second setback arrived when Israel base winger Patrick Doeplah died on Tuesday morning in Monrovia, after arriving in Liberia for a day training session with the team, before heading for Ghana. Lone Star Under-23 was contented for the arrival of America Under-20 Liberian forward Alex Nimo to replace the late Patrick Doeplah.

The team landed in Ghana on Thursday, they were informed that Nimo will not play for Liberia, until the right document are put into place. The team was left in the hands of Sekou Jabateh, he did his best, but they still lost.

The Liberia Football Association has confirmed the death scene of Patrick Doeplah, the Israeli based Liberian striker who met his untimely death on Tuesday morning.

The LFA in a statement issued Wednesday, March 23, 2011, said the player died at the home of his girlfriend on the old road, a suburb of Monrovia and not in a hotel room as was earlier stated.

Medical report quoting Dr. Brisbane said Patrick died Tuesday morning March 22, 2011 upon arrival at the JFK medical center in Monrovia, where he was taken by friends.

According to the LFA: «He had spent the night of March 21 at the home of his fiancée on the Old Road a few hours upon arrival into the country from Israel to form part of the national U-23 delegation to Ghana to engage against Ivory Coast on Sunday».

The Football House says the Government has launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to Patrick Doeplah’s death. The LFA says it is also sponsoring full autopsy on the mortal remains of the player to ascertain the foundation of his demise.

According to a statement signed by LFA spokesman Henry Flomo, the LFA wishes the family of the player to take solace in God Almighty during the period of bereavement. The Football House says the loss of Doeplah is colossal to the nation’s plan of improving the potential of youthful players.

Meanwhile, the LFA will open a book of condolence by 12:noon Thursday March 24, 2011 at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia; it will be preceded by a major news conference.

All football lovers, officials, the media and members of the LFA are expected to turnout. The Liberian leader and Chief Patron of sports Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf have presented the LFA US$20,000 as support to the national football teams of Liberia.

The President also wishes the national team victory in their endeavour away to Ivory Coast and Cape Verde. Disclosing this on Wednesday, LFA president Musa Bility said the Football House is grateful to the president for the gesture. He said the amount will help boost the morale of the players.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Everton Mint, it is a black and white mint flavoured sweet with a delicious toffee centre. Everton is also a district of Liverpool in the United Kingdom and the name and home of a famous English football team; Everton F.C. Now, in the late 1800’s there was a sweet shop called ‘Ye Anciente Everton Toffee House’ which was owned by a lady called Old Ma Bushell. ‘Ye Anciente Everton Toffee House’ was situated near to the Queen’s Head Hotel in Everton. Old Ma Bushell created a sweet she called the Everton Toffee which she sold to people on their way to watch Everton F.C. play their football matches; this turned out to be hugely successful and popular among the Everton F.C. fans.

Unfortunately for Old Ma Bushell Everton F.C. moved to a different football stadium called Goodison Park. Goodison Park was situated very close to another sweet shop called ‘Mother Noblett’s Toffee Shop’. Mother Noblett realised there was a lucrative opportunity for her to sell her toffee’s to the Everton F.C. fans just as Old Ma Bushell had, however she could not use the name Everton Toffee as Old Ma Bushell had already patented it. To overcome the problem Mother Noblett invented a sweet which was a mint candy on the outside but with her toffee in the middle and named it the ‘Everton Mint’. Mother Noblett also had the idea to make her Everton Mints black and white which at the time was the colour of the Everton F.C. football kit. The combination of the name and the very well made toffee sweet helped to make the Everton Mint hugely popular amongst fans and locals.

Mother Noblett’s ingenuity did not stop there; she met with the Everton board and agreed with them that before each football match a girl would walk around the outside of the football pitch tossing Everton Mints to the crowd in the stands, free of charge! This helped make Mother Noblett and her Everton Mint the famous name it is today. Mother Noblett’s granddaughter was given the honour of being the first ‘Toffee Girl’ and this tradition stayed with Everton F.C. for many years even after Everton changed their football kit from black and white to royal blue.

Mother Noblett made such a success of her sweet and the crowd loved the ‘Toffee Girl’ so much that the club and fans decided to nickname the club the ‘Toffees’, a name which has stuck with Everton throughout it’s history and is still recognisable today.

Unfortunately not much is known of what happened to Old Ma Bushell or her ‘Everton Toffee’; however Old Ma Bushell must be given the credit for the initial idea of the Everton Toffee/Mint. Credit must also go to Mother Noblett for having the vision and the tenacity to take Old Ma Bushells idea and make it a big success. The Everton Mint now falls under the umbrella of sweet giant Barker and Dobson and with their help has managed to stay just as popular now as it was over 100 years ago.
