Exploring Paris – The Romantic Capital of Europe

Paris was basically founded just in the end of the 3rd century BC by a tribe who then settled and started to live in that particular region which during those days was called «Île de la Cité» (which now in the modern day is known as Paris). The name Paris is basically derived from the name of the people who discovered it and settled there called as «Parisii».

Paris is the capital city of France nowadays and is one of the most populous cities of the country and world having population round about 2,203,817 (according to January 2006). Paris today is one the world’s biggest and leading cultural and business centers and is also considered as one of the Europe’s biggest economies.

The most important thing about Paris is that out of the «Fortune Global 500» companies 38 of them are from the Paris region. And also it has the honor of hosting many international organizations, out of which one example is UNESCO.

If we take a look geographically then Paris is located in the north side of the (River Seine). Paris is basically divided into two parts out of which one is the older part of Paris and the other is the smaller and comparatively so called as new Paris. But if we take a closer look at the geographical location of Paris than whole of the city is mostly made up of flat surface. In total the covered are of whole of the Paris is 460 square miles.

Looking at the climate France does not receive many rainfalls during the whole year. Temperature remains moderate which means that it does not possess extreme summer or winters. If one wants to visit Paris than the best season is the spring season, in which you can really admire the natural beauty of Paris.

There is a lot of monuments and landmarks in Paris which act as the most important and attracting places for the tourists. Among these monuments «Eifel Tower» has now become the symbol/representation of Paris. It was a temporary construction from «Gustav Eifel» in 1889 but it was not abolished and now it is considered as an icon of Paris and an endurable figure.

Economically, Paris is a strong city and contributes a lot in the total GDP of the world. Having a GDP of (731.3 billion US$) makes Paris region one of the biggest and strongest GDP’s of Europe.

Sports are also of major importance in Paris. As Paris also hosts the football seasons and world cups «Paris Saint German FC» is the highest ranked football club in whole of Paris. Paris also has its most popular basketball team named as «Paris Basket Racing», also in rugby union the team from Paris is called «Stade Français. Tennis is also an important sport as «French Open» is highly ranked as a top level tennis tournament. The most liked stadium in Paris is the «Stade de France» which has the honor of holding the most important event of international football «world Cup 98» and recently the UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE final against «Arsenal» and FC Barcelona» was held.

Planning Ahead to Ensure London 2012 Legacy

As the Commonwealth Games in India come to an end, thoughts turn increasingly to the London Olympics in 2012. And the main thought from a construction point of view is to avoid the problems and last-minute panics that Delhi has had.

The signs do appear to be promising, with construction of the Olympic Stadium well-advanced and other parts of the project moving forward at speed. Indeed, despite the Games being almost two years away, plans are well developed in terms of what happens to the site once the closing ceremony has finished. The Olympic Park Legacy Company, which will take possession of the site once the Olympics are over, is charged with obtaining the best value out of the development.

West Ham Utd Interested…

The company has been in discussions with over 100 firms about future plans for the Olympic Stadium. However, with the passing of the 30th September deadline for official bids, only West Ham FC, in partnership with Newham Council, has registered a bid. This proposes to use the £537 million venue as West Ham’s new home, reducing the capacity from 80,000 to 60,000 and retaining the running track so it is still available for athletics events. Although previously hostile to the retention of the track, the club now accepts that it has to stay as a key commitment made to the International Olympic Committee by the London bidders. Indeed, West Ham is pushing its position as a leading football club as a means of boosting athletics attendances and developing new talent.

With modern stadia needing to earn revenue all the year round, West Ham has held talks with entertainment giant AEG regarding a possible partnership. Concert promoter Live Nation has also come into discussions and there are other plans for the stadium, including its possible use as a venue if England’s 2018 World Cup bid is successful.

The Olympic site’s high-tech media centre will be used by around 20,000 media staff while the Games are on. After that, there are plans to convert the 90,000 square metres of facilities into a digital and media complex along similar lines to the Googleplex complex in California. The legacy organisation has invited bidders for the communications facilities, although allowing only nine weeks for proposals to create a business district with offices, education facilities, culture spaces and studios. The hope is that around 8,000-10,000 jobs will eventually be created on the Olympic site.

Plans for Athletes’ Village to Become Residential Homes…

Plans are also moving forward to convert the publicly owned athletes’ village into homes. The original plan had been for the athletes’ village to be privately funded but prospects fell through when the recession hit and the government was forced to invest an extra £324 million into what became a £1 billion project. The Olympic Development Authority (ODA) is now looking to recoup at least some of the government’s investment in the project in Stamford by getting private sector companies to take over the village. It is looking for expressions of interest in what ultimately could amount to over 4,000 new homes.

At present, there are 2,818 potential homes with 1,379 of these having been bought by Triathlon Homes for affordable housing. The ODA still owns the remaining 1,439 properties but hopes they will eventually be rented or sold on the private market. Six plots within the village site are earmarked for future development, with the possibility of a further 2,100-2,500 new homes being built. Once a shortlist of interested parties has been produced, discussions and proposals will follow and the aim is to decide on the disposal by next summer.

Budget Issues and Management Changes…

Development of the Olympic site appears to be on schedule and there is an admirable safety record, it has not been without its problems. Not least of these is that the capital budget, currently standing at £9.3 billion, is almost three times the original estimate. On top of this, a further several hundred million pounds are to be spent on converting the site after the Games are over.

As a result of the current economic situation, the ODA has been ordered to reduce its budget by £27 million. This was soon followed by its Chief Executive, David Higgins, announcing he was leaving in February 2011 to join Network Rail. Higgins has been in charge for five years and was credited with keeping the project on schedule and without major incidents. His successor will be Dennis Hone, who has been the ODA’s Director of Finance for the last four years and so knows the project well so hopefully the games will stay ‘on-track’ and avoid the negative press that dominated the run up to this years commonwealth games.

What Are the Best German Beer Brands?

Because there are so many excellent breweries in Germany (more than 1,300), it is quite difficult to say what the best German beer brands are. Foreigners undoubtedly are familiar with brands such as Lowenbrau and Becks; these are among the most exported German beers. Germans rather have favourite types of beer. They are more likely to order by style such as a Pils or a Doppelbock rather than by brand name like Bitburger or Krombacher. There are those however who distinguish between a Bitburger Pils and a Krombacher Pils, or a Schofferhofer Hefeweisen and a Paulaner HefeWeissen. It is these connoisseurs that hold the key to determining the best German beer brands.

5 of the Best German Beer Brands

There has been an ongoing survey as to what the best German beer brands are on the ToyTown Germany website since 2004. The respondents are people who live and work in Germany, both native Germans and many expats from around the world, who are regular beer drinkers. It is no surprise that hundreds of beers have been named, but there are five particular brands that are mentioned more than others. Following is a summary according to popularity of what local consumers consider to be the best brands of German beer.

Augustiner – This brand turned up more times than any other. Augustiner beer, like many great beers, is brewed and produced by monks, in this case the Augustinian Brotherhood in Munich. This brewery has been producing quality beer since 1328, so it’s no surprise that they might be pretty good at it by now. The Augustiner Brewery produces several types of beer of which Heller Bock, a light strong beer of 7% alcohol is a crowd favourite.

Lammsbrau – The Neumarkter Lammsbrau Brewery near Nuremberg sets exceedingly high standards for the ingredients to be used in its brews. In fact any ingredient used in a Lammsbräu must be from a certified and controlled organic grower. But their quality control doesn’t stop there. Aroma hops are used as opposed to the traditional bitter hops, thus giving the beer a more pungent aroma and a less bitter taste. Their water is sourced from a protected underground spring, and they produce their own malt and fresh yeast. The passion for quality control has indeed made this one of the best German beer brands.

Franziskaner – Another Bavarian brewery based in Munich, Franziskaner has been in operation since 1363. They specialize in producing only two types of wheat beer – a light and a dark. It is most likely because of this specialization that their beer is so highly rated among locals and expats alike. Franziskaner is also popular around the world and can be found on both the east and west coasts of America, in Asia, Australia, South America (Ecuador), and throughout Europe.

Erdinger – It is no wonder that another Bavarian brewery heads the list of best beer brands in Germany. Erdinger is based in the town of Erding, and has been producing quality brew since 1886. The most popular of their beers is the Erdinger Weissbrau, a fairly light wheat beer of 5.6% alcohol strength.

Paulaner – Paulaner is a partner of FC Bayern Munich, and like its football club companion, it is also a champion among its peers. Based in Munich, as you have noticed that most of the best beers are, Paulaner was also initially brewed by monks beginning in 1634. Paulaner is also exported to more than 70 countries around the world. Their Original Münchner Hell, a premium lager, seemingly the most popular.
