EPL Season 2007-08 – Your Player Transfer Guide

Shirley Bassey’s song Big Spender could not come truer for the 20-club English Premiership League. With the new season starting on 11 August 2007, the transfer outlay for the 20 top soccer clubs in England has already exceeded the £300m spent last season – then already setting a dubious expenditure record. In fact, soccer pundits expect their total outlay is to surpass the magical £500m mark by the time the transfer window shuts on 31 August 2007, which is more than enough to feed millions of homeless people around the world. Indeed, the EPL is by far the world’s most successfully and obscenely expensive soccer league.

Get this: with the latest television deal signed and sealed, the worldwide TV rights almost doubled to £625m, including highlights, radio, Internet and mobile-phone contracts, total amount expected to be poured into the game is well over £2.7b for the next three years. As consumers, we are indirectly funding this amount of money by paying more to watch live TV action.

Strange enough, baring an exception 1995 whereby the title was won on the last day by Blackburn Rovers, the crown has been worn by only three clubs, with Manchester United dominating follow by Arsenal and Chelsea. We find it difficult to believe that the title will escape from the clutches of any of these three clubs in the coming new season. But who knows? Perhaps Liverpool, the most successful English club in history with their massive outlay this season, will win their first ever EPL title.

In the latest transfer market, Manchester United has fired the first salvo by spending over £50m to procure new players so far. Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspurs are playing catch-up after spending over £30m each, with surprising Portsmouth, West Ham and Fulham over £20m each, and Arsenal, Sunderland, Birmingham and Chelsea a little over £10m each. With the league being so lucrative, it is easy to understand why even modest clubs are splurging to maximum their chances of staying up for as many seasons as possible. This is evidenced by the transfer dealings of new Fulham manager Lawrie Sanchez, who sanctioned more than £20m worth of deals, well surpassing the measly £1m spent four years ago. And this makes Fulham the biggest spender in West London, surpassing the mighty Chelsea.

For people like me without deep pockets, I am contented with spending a few dollars on a wager that Shirley Bassey’s Big Spender will top the bill board charts once again this coming season. Don’t bet against it. Cheers.

A Football Betting Nightmare

The Golden Rule of Soccer Betting.

Never bet more than you can afford to lose. Never. Ever. Rule Number One in the Sports Gambler’s bible. But surely there are times when an outcome is so inevitable that you could bet a large sum of money and collect your guaranteed winnings within a day? Surely there must be exceptions to this golden rule? I would suggest that there are no exceptions. Consider the following tale of an unfortunate (or silly) punter from back in 2001. This is a true story and one that always sticks with me whenever I have an urge to gamble impulsively.

The date is Saturday September 29th 2001. The venue is White Hart Lane, North London, home of Tottenham Hotspur, or ‘Spurs’. The opponents are Manchester United who make the trip to London without key players Roy Keane (suspended) and Ryan Giggs (rested after midweek Champions League clash). There is a buzz in the air, a positive vibe amongst the home supporters who feel they can overcome the depleted United side. What followed was one of the most incredible days in Premier League history.

Tottenham Blow United Away Early – Cue the impulsive Gamble.

Spurs started the game at breakneck speed and before United had time to deal with the pressure, they found themselves two goals in arrears, thanks to Dean Richards and Les Ferdinand. The Red Devils were clearly shell-shocked and before they had time to regroup, the flying Christian Ziege made it 3-0 to Spurs before half time. One can only imagine the infamous ‘hairdryer’ routine dished out to the United players by fiery boss Alex Ferguson during the interval. Our story though, concerns a Tottenham fan who was at the game with his mates and girlfriend. With emotions running high, he convinced his girlfriend that it would be a sound investment to put their entire mortgage on a Tottenham win. With a 3-0 half-time lead the odds would have been ridiculously low, perhaps 1.03, but put enough money down, and 3% suddenly becomes a nice little earner. What could possibly go wrong? They had recently purchased a house together and with his girlfriend’s blessing, he contacted his finance broker and the bet was placed. Their house was now riding on the outcome of the game.

The Incredible Comeback.

One can only imagine the nervous tension and excitement that accompanied our soccer punting hero as the second half kicked off. He was probably planning what lavish holiday they could take or what spending spree they could enjoy. How rudely interrupted were his thoughts when Andy Cole pulled a goal back after 45 seconds of the second half. Less than quarter of an hour later French defender Laurent Blanc headed home a corner and, when Van Nistelrooy scored the equalising goal with over quarter of an hour left on the clock, hearts were in mouths for Spurs fans and emotional punters. Veron and Beckham made it 5-3 to the Red Devils by the end of what was a fascinating game and monumental comeback. It’s difficult not to feel some sympathy for the losing punter – he lost his house and in all probability his woman. However, the first piece of football betting advice and the most essential soccer betting tip you should learn is to never bet more than you can afford to lose, no matter how sure you are about the outcome. In soccer, as in sport, there are quite simply no guarantees.

Granted this was an unusual scenario and a comeback of this magnitude probably happens only once every few years. The point is that it CAN happen and for this reason it’s paramount to place bets within your means. EPL 2011-12 Preview: Manchester City Vs Newcastle

Manchester City are due to host Newcastle, on Saturday, November 19, 2011, in match week 12.

Mancini’s men are coming off a thrilling 3-2 away win at QPR, in match week 11. QPR became the first team to take the lead against City, this season, when Bothroyd put them ahead on 29 minutes. Dzeko got City level 14 minutes later, and after Silva put the visitors ahead on 52 minutes, QPR displayed great resolve by scoring an equaliser via Helguson in the 70th minute. But five minutes later Yaya Toure had the last laugh for City, who stayed five points adrift of Manchester United on the table, on the back of their win at Loftus Road. For all of QPR’s good showing, City appear unstoppable this season, and their various rivals have shipped 39 goals in 11 games against Mancini’s wards.

Newcastle edged out Everton in a tense home encounter, at St James’ Park, in match week 11. Ryan Taylor’s 29th minute goal was sufficient to gain the hosts full points after an own goal by Heitinga on 12 minutes gave the Magpies the lead. The eventual score flattered Newcastle a trifle, after being subjected to a tremendous fight by Everton, but though Rodwell scored for the Toffees on 90 minutes, it was too little too late, as Newcastle held on grimly to take away all three points.

Head to head, Manchester City and Newcastle have met 20 times, in the Premier League, in the last 10 years, and City have won on 10 of those occasions, while Newcastle have won on 6, with the remaining 4 games drawn. The last time these teams met was in December 2010; that match hosted at St James’ Park was won 3-1 by Manchester City.

Manchester City are on roll having won all but one of their 10 league games; Newcastle, who have enjoyed the best unbeaten start to their league campaign, equalling their performances in the 1950-51 and 1994-95 seasons, have won 7 and drawn 3 of their last 10 and remain the only unbeaten team apart from their rivals of match week 12.

Currently at the top of the league table, Mancini’s squad have hosted 5 home games, this season, and won all of them, while Newcastle who are in 3rd place have had 3 wins and 2 draws in 5 games on the road.

Newcastle have been the surprise packet of the season and manager Alan Pardew might be forgiven if he harboured visions of winning the Premiership this season, for such has the impact of his wards’ performance been. But bearding the Manchester City lions in their den might well prove an impossible ambition for the Magpies.

Manchester City’s starting eleven against QPR: Hart, Richards, Savic, Lescott, Kolarov, Barry, Y Toure, Milner, Silva, Aguero, Dzeko.

Newcastle’s starting eleven against Everton: Krul, Simpson, Coloccini, Taylor, Taylor, Marveaux, Cabaye, Guthrie, Gutierrez, Best, Ba.

The Rise of Chelsea As a European Super Power

The English football club Chelsea FC which is founded in the year 1905 is one of the most feared football clubs by the opposition for the past decade. The current European Champions League winners and the four times English Premier League Champions has been playing top flight football since its inception during the start of the 1905.

The home ground of this London based football club is at Stamford Bridge which is a 45,000 seat stadium on which the club has been playing all of its home games in the English Premier League after it has been built. Chelsea football club however took fifty years since it is founded to claim their first English Premier League title in 1955.

Even though they do not boast the trophy cabinet along the likes of other English clubs such as that of Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool who were the traditional top flight English clubs, Chelsea football club have thrown these teams out from their throne to become the champions during the recent years. The golden period of the English football club have started since the Russian Oligarch Roman Abramovich took over the club in 2003 and had invested millions to take the club to the new heights.

Several high profile signings took place and high profile managers were brought who helped the club to reach the level it is now. It was the arrival of the young charismatic and the talismanic manager Jose Mourinho to the club hierarchy that had revolutionized the Chelsea football club as well as the English Football. Trophies started flowing in since the Portuguese manager took the helm of the club and Chelsea had conquered back to back English Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006 dethroning Manchester United and Arsenal.

Before leaving the club on mutual consent after falling out with the billionaire club owner, Jose Mourinho has turned Chelsea as the powerhouse of English as well as European Football. Chelsea has won a total of four premier league titles, four league cups, four community shields and seven FA cups on the English front.

However on the European front, overall the club has achieved one UEFA Super Cup, One UEFA Champions League and two of the UEFA Intercontinental Cup, otherwise called as UEFA Cup Winners Cup. Chelsea play its home games wearing the blue jersey with the white socks and away games with shirt colors varying from yellow, all white, black and other shades.
