Premier League Preview: Arsenal Vs Chelsea

Arsenal are set to host Chelsea on Monday, December 27, in a match that could have a great bearing on Gunners’ title bid this season.

Despite being placed second after 17 match weeks, Arsene Wenger’s squad haven’t exactly covered themselves in glory against the better teams, losing to Chelsea, Man United and Tottenham.

Arsenal dominated the first 30 minutes of the game against Chelsea and should have scored twice in the first 100 seconds. And with Drogba putting the blues ahead just minutes before the interval, the Gunners came out firing after the break. And but for an out-of-the-word free kick by Alex for Chelsea, Wenger’s men could still have pressed for an equaliser.

The loss to Chelsea came on October 2, and much water has flowed under the proverbial bridge, since then. Circumstances have changed, not least in terms of match fit players available. During their visit to Stamford Bridge in October, Gunners missed Fabregas, Almunia, Van Persie, Bendtner and Walcott, all sidelined through injury.

While Almunia is not fully recovered from his elbow injury, Wenger will welcome the return of Fabregas, Van Persie and Walcott, and the presence of the trio could make all the difference to the confidence of a team that has suffered six consecutive league losses to the Blues.

Another factor that has worked against Gunners’ best interests has been Drogba who has scored 13 goals in as many matches against the Emirates squad. And with Drogba getting back to his goal scoring ways against Tottenham, Wenger’s charges will pay heed to the omens.

While Arsenal’s attack has been impressive, and their midfield should get a boost with Fabregas’s return, the back-line has been a cause for worry. With both Almunia and Fabianski injured, they also have a problem between the posts. Their third goalkeeper Szczesny who had his Premier League debut against Man United struggled on the back of a porous defence in which Squillaci was the biggest culprit.

On the plus side, Nasri is in tremendous form and could make the difference up front. While Arshavin could give way to Van Persie and Wilshere to Fabregas, Arsene Wenger would also want the pace of Walcott against the Chelsea back-line, more obdurate after the return of Terry.

Chelsea have been through a bad spell of three draws and two losses from matches 13 to 17 that has seen them slip from the top of the table to fourth place, but there are clear signs of a revival. The champions should have reclaimed their top spot in match week 17, but for Drogba’s missed penalty in the dying stages.

With Lampard’s return, the Blues will have the strength they need in midfield to dominate possession and neutralise the Arsenal forward line. Arsenal’s weak back-line should be sorely tested by the likes of Kalou and Malouda, apart from Drogba.

Arsenal will rely on home advantage against Chelsea who haven’t had a great record in nine games on the road this season, with three matches each won, lost and drawn. Gunners on their part have won five of eight home games while losing the remainder.

If both sides were able to field their best elevens, this could turn out to be the most exciting game of the Premiership yet.

Arsenal had the following men in their starting eleven against Manchester united: Szczesny, Sagna, Squillaci, Koscielny, Clichy, Song, Rosicky, Wiulshere, Nasri, Chamakh and Arshavin. Fabregas, Van Persie and Walcott featured as substitutes.

Chelsea’s starting eleven against Tottenham comprised: Cech, Ferreira, Ivanovic, Terry, Cole, Ramires, Mikel, Essien, Kalou, Anelka and Malouda. Droba, Sturridge and Lampard were used as substitutes.

What Are the Qualities of a Football Team Striker?

Every team is like a useless pack of cards if there are no good strikers because you can’t win a match without scoring goals and you can’t score goals without having potent strikers. The question then is who is a striker? And what are the qualities of a good striker?

A striker is a football player whose responsibility is to score goals. This simply means that if a striker cannot score goals then he should not be in the team in the first place.

Now, let’s look at the qualities of a good striker or forward. A good striker should have a clear vision just like a good goalkeeper. A good striker should be able to convert any chance to a goal. But he cannot just take his chances if he cannot see very well.

A good striker should have speed. This is where counter attack comes into play. If the strikers in a team lack speed then counter attacks become useless. If you take a look at Spanish, Argentine and Brazilian national teams you will appreciate the value of speed to any striker. Spanish, Argentine and Brazilian teams are so good at counter attacks simply because they have strikers that can move with the ball so fast.

A good striker should have what I call «goal sense». This simply means that he or she should know when to use the head or leg. He or she should know when to tap in the ball. He or she should know when to pass the ball to another player that is better positioned to score the goal. He or she should also know when to be selfish with the ball.

A good striker should have inner strength, vigor, stamina, or energy. He or she should be able to surmount any kind of opposition once he or she is with the ball. Great strikers of our time such as Samuel Eto’o Fils of Cameroon and FC Barcelona of Spain, Didier Drogba of Ivory Coast and Chelsea FC of England and Wayne Rooney of England and Manchester United of England are some graphic examples of strikers that have the much needed strength.

Arsenal Beat Rivals Chelsea To Improve Title Chances

Arsenal beat Chelsea for the first time in over two years to climb up to second place in the Premier League, while Chelsea’s poor run of form continues.

Chelsea had won the five previous encounters between to the two teams, while Arsenal were developing a reputation for capitulating every time they played another top team. Arsenal’s poor form against their title rivals has cost them dearly in recent seasons, and having recently lost against Manchester United, the Gunners looked to put yet another insipid performance behind them, as they strive to mount a serious title challenge this season.

Chelsea have now taken just 6 points, from a possible 24, in their last eight league games, which is their worst performance in the league since 1998. Manager Carlo Ancelotti may come under renewed pressure following another defeat. Chelsea’s chance of retaining their Premier League trophy now looks to be very slim.

Arsenal started the game brightly and continued to press the Chelsea defence, Chelsea’s only effort during the early stages of the game came from nemesis Didier Drogba, who had scored 13 goals in the previous 13 games against the Gunners, but his shot from some distance was wide of the goal.

As the Blues looked a shadow of free scoring the team who started the season, the Gunners increased the pressure, and it was no surprise when Alex Song scored after 43 minutes to give the home side a deserved lead.

Chelsea made a half time substitution, with Ramires replacing John Obi Mikel, but not for the first time this season, he failed to bring any inspiration to the Chelsea team. Fabregas put Arsenal 2-0 in front after 51 minutes and 90 seconds later Theo Walcott compounded Chelsea’s misery by adding a third goal.

With the game now effectively over as a contest, Chelsea made a an attempt to salvage the game, and Ivanovic headed a goal for Chelsea. With Arsenal’s recent poor record of maintaining a lead, the Blues looked for a second goal, but this time the Gunners weathered the storm and actually finished the game stronger.

Chelsea provided little in the way of inspiration and must surely now have relinquished their title, while Arsenal moved within two points of Manchester United, although they have played a game more.
