Didier Drogba’s goal for Chelsea against Arsenal on Sunday was his sixth of the ongoing Premier League season, and the strike helped the Ivorian draw level with teammate Florent Malouda and United’s Dimitar Berbatov as joint top-scorer in the competition.

Drogba got the first hat-trick of the Premiership season on its opening day playing at home against West Brom. Chelsea won that match 6-0. Thereafter, the Ivorian has had three goals in six matches, in all of which he started for the Stamford Bridge squad.

Interestingly, all of Drogba’s goals have come in home matches, one each against Stoke City, Blackpool and Arsenal, games that Ancelotti’s squad won 2-0, 4-0 and 2-0, respectively.

Like Drogba, Malouda opened his scoring account in Chelsea’s season opener against Albion, in which he found the back of the rival net twice.

But unlike Drogba, Malouda has not restricted his scoring to home matches. His third goal came in Chelsea’s 6-0 away win against Wigan, his fourth came in the home match against Stoke City, his fifth and sixth in the home game with Blackpool on September 19.

Also, unlike Drogba, Malouda has not been in the starting eleven in every match. In fact, in the West Ham match on September 11, the Frenchman came on as a late second half substitute in the 84th minute.

Berbatov has been Manchester United’s saviour this season, with Wayne Rooney’s truancy giving the Bulgarian an opportunity to prove that the Old Trafford squad are not a one-man outfit, centred around Rooney.

Berbatov began his scoring, with a strike in United’s opener at Old Trafford against Newcastle on August 15. He did not add to his tally, in the next game with Fulham, played away at Craven Cottage. The Bulgarian striker’s second goal of the season came in his team’s 3-0 win at home against West Ham, on August 28.

Berbatov’s next goal came in the away game against Everton, that ended in a 3-3 draw, followed by a hat-trick against Liverpool. His third goal came in injury time, ensuring that United banked full points from that match.

Berbatov’s exclusion from the starting eleven in the away match against Sunderland has raised more than a few eyebrows. But following Sir Alex’s refusal to talk to the media after the Liverpool match where the media went to town over the United manager’s comment on Torres, nobody is able to discuss the rationale of Fergie’s team selection, with the big man.

Sunderland’s Darren Bent and Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez have both scored five goals each this season, and are hot on the heels of the top three, in contention for the Golden Boot.

Named for its origins in the east, the Asian handicap can be summed up in the simplest of terms as the practice of point spread betting in soccer matches. Although this betting model has been used in hockey for years, it is relatively new to soccer. It has gained considerable popularity largely due to the fact that it has an increased probability for winning, in contrast to traditional wagering practices such as 1X2. Bookmakers always offer higher odds on Asian handicap, routinely paying out at rates between 97-99%, as compared to traditional betting where the payout ranges normally between 89-94%.     

Where the Asian handicap matrix differs from traditional fixed odds betting is that it eliminates a tie from the equation, using a handicap to force a winner, thereby reducing the maximum number of possible outcomes from three to two. This format offers two betting scenarios that each offer a 50% chance of winning, making it similar to the odds you would expect from a baseball or basketball game, games in which a tie is an impossibility. 

The system in its application is simple enough. The bookies designate a handicap or «line» for the weakest team in the match in order to bring the odds for each team as close as possible to dead even. The parameters of designating Asian handicap lines begin at 0 and go as high as 3. The handicap is determined by the disparity in the odds each team has of winning the match. The principle of the system in this context can best be expressed with the following example.  

You want to bet the Asian handicap on a match between Manchester United and Fulham. The handicap is 1.5 to Fulham and you take the points. For betting purposes this means that Fulham is essentially starting the game with a 1 1/2 goal lead over Manchester United. If the final score of the match is Manchester United 3-2 Fulham then you would win, as the final score with the handicap would be Manchester United 3-3.5 Fulham.  

A vast majority of the matches that are handicapped using the Asian matrix are given lines in intervals of 1/4 and 1/2 points, both of which  eliminate the possibility of a push as no team will ever win on the scoreboard by a fraction of a goal. With the fractional handicap, there is always a winner. Of course that means there is always a losing bet as well.   

We have seen an example of the 1/2 point bet, now let’s look at the 1/4 point bet. The 1/4 bet performs a bit differently from the ½ bet in that it splits the difference between the nearest half point intervals and distributes half of your bet to each one. To see this in practical terms we can go back to our Manchester United vs. Fulham example. 

In this example you have Fulham with 1 1/4 points and you are betting $500. With the fractional handicap of 1 1/4, you’re splitting your bet in this manner: $250 at 1 point and $250 at 1.5 points. Our final score was Manchester United 3-2 Fulham, which means that the bet tied ($250 at 1 with a final score of 3-3) and won ($250 at 1.5 with a final score of 3-3.5). In this example you would get back $750 from your original $500 bet. On the flip side of that equation, you can also tie and lose.  

From our example if we place the same $500 bet with a line of 1 3/4 and give Manchester United another goal we would have an example of a tie and lose bet. The final score on the scoreboard is Manchester United 4-2 Fulham, making the line score Manchester United 4-3.75 Fulham. You would tie ($250 at 2 with a final score of 4-4) and lose ($250 at 1.5 with a final score of 4-3.5). In this example, you would lose half of your $500 bet and be refunded the other half. 

Some Asian handicap bets will use whole numbers, which can result in a tie. However, the tie is administered as a push, meaning your full bet is refunded and there is no winner or loser.

Overall the Asian handicap is extremely attractive for the increased odds it offers and has a variety of betting options that will payout even money or better.

Thirdly we want to check if the team we have in mind are struggling with any injuries or suspensions to key players. The team we fancy may be on a hot streak at the moment but if the next game they play they will be without their star defender through suspension and their top goal scorer picked up a knock in training we need to know about this. There are no one man teams in the premiership but missing key players upsets the balance of teams and can cause unexpected results. We want to expect these unexpected results.

Finally it is well worth looking at previous results between the two teams playing each other. Bogey teams exist and can continue inexplicably through various incarnations of a team. A quick look at the head to head record between two teams can quickly reveal any recurring results and are well worth bearing in mind when making selections.

There are absolutely no guarantees with football predictions, particularly premiership predictions as the premier league is widely respected as one of the most competitive in the world. However if you follow the tips above you will improve your chances at making the correct selection where others wont.

Manchester United star Portuguese midfielder Christiano Ronaldo says he is raring to go and is as fit as ever ahead of the start of the 2007/2008 Premiership football season as Man Utd prepare their defence of the Premiership title.

Man Utd manager Sir Alex Ferguson has made many big signings ahead of the new season, strengthening the squad somewhat with the acquisitions of Anderson, Nani, Owen Hargreaves and (eventually hopefully) Carlos Tevez.

When asked about the new signings Ronaldo stated that they are all fantastic signings, they will be great for the club and the team – and that he hopes they never leave.

Cristiano Ronaldo meanwhile has been in terrific form at the start of the pre-season, with many dazzling performances on Utd’s 4 day tour of the Far East. Sir Alex Ferguson will surely be a lot happier with the progress the players have made fitness wise this pre-season, after having to endure many of his star players performing tirelessly at least seasons World Cup finals in Germany.

This season around the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo and co will all be fully prepared for the coming up season, after admitting last season that they started feeling the effects of a prolonged season last time around.

Manchester United will be facing nearest rivals Chelsea on Sunday in the Charity Shield football match at Wembley, and the weekend after they will open their Premiership account with a home match against last seasons surprise package Reading.

Ronaldo can’t wait for the new season to begin, and is already looking to build upon the success of last year – which has already seen him crowned PFA Young Player and PFA Player’s Player Of The Year.

«Things are going very good for me,» Cristiano Ronaldo told MUTV. «I feel fit and I’m very happy with the way our preparations have gone so far. But I must keep my form going. The Premier League starts soon and I must be ready for that. I hope to play well. My ambition is still the same – I want to play well, score goals and provide assists. I tried to do the same last year and I worked hard to do that. I hope things come good for me.»

It remains to be seen how Cristiano Ronaldo can really improve on his performances last season around, but with just a few weeks away from the kick off of the new Premiership season we can’t wait to see how the new-look Manchester United team performs, and whether Christiano Ronaldo can really build on his success of last season.
