Jay Jay Okocha – So Good They Name Him Twice

Augustine Azuka ( Jay-Jay ) Okocha who was born August 14 ,1973 in Enugu ( same day as my mom difference year though is a Nigerian footballer who currently plays for Hull city in the lower league in England a move which was completed in 2007. Nicknamed Jay-Jay for his entertaining and Flamboyant style of play.

Okocha was playing football at the age of just 16 for his first club, Rangers international of Enugu, before a chance encounter whilst on holiday in Germany launched his international career. Okocha tried out for fourth division club Borussia Neunkirchen and they snapped him up.

Via Saarbrucken, he went on to join Eintracht Frankfurt in December 1991 – still before his 18th birthday – where he was to explode on to the Bundesliga scene.

Five years on, he moved to Turkey to play for Fenerbahce where he gained Champions League experience (notably in a shock win against Manchester United at Old Trafford) and hero worship in Istanbul.

In 1998, Jay-Jay became the most expensive African player ever with his £14million move to Paris St Germain.

After seeing out his contract with the French giants Okocha was available on a free transfer – hence the rumoured £3.3million-a-year wages he was rumoured to be demanding. It is testament to Allardyce’s negotiation skills that he was able to convince the midfielder to drop his high demands and join the Barclaycard Premiership outfit.

He has played at the 1994 ,1998 ( where he was named in the tournament best XI ) , and 2002 Fifa world cup and many African Nations cup Tournaments with Nigeria. He won the olympic gold medal with Nigeria in 1996 beating Brazil in the semi finals before seeing off Argentina in the final.

Proudly a member of Fifa 100 , a list of 125 greatest living footballers selected by lengendary Brazilian Pele in conjunction with FIFA’S centenary celebrations. In the 2004/2005 season he won the BBC’s African Player of the Year award (for the second successive year).

It is testament to Allardyce’s negotiation skills that he was able to convince the midfielder to drop his high demands and join the Barclaycard Premiership outfit.

In the 2004/05 season – his third for the Trotters – he made 33 appearances and scored 7 goals, including two in the first game of the season – a 4-1 victory against Charlton.

He was relief of his captainship band with Bolton in early 2005/06. This is Much attributed to his public admittance that he is interested in a move away to Quatar. He finally left the team after the final game of the season when Bolton announced they will not be renewing his contract , manager sam allardyce shaking Okocha’s hand before he came on the field in his last game.

After a lucrative year playing for Qatar Sports Club, Jay-Jay returned to England to take up a new challenge at the KC Stadium.

In 2004 he released a DVD called «superskills with Okocha » where he teaches children at a football school the most difficult football tricks.

He is happily married to Nkechi , a native of his country, Nigeria. Blessed with a son who he Named «A-J Okocha.

Battle For Supremacy – English Premier League 2008-09 Preview

The battle for ultimate supremacy will begin on August 16th. But there are a few questions raised on the champions of yesteryear. With last year’s title hunt lasting till the last match played, this year’s title promises nail-biters even before the season starts. Now, let us see what we can expect from this season of Barclays Premier League :

The Champions : Manchester United

Chasing their third straight EPL title, ManU has been in news all this summer (thanks to the transfer saga regarding Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Real Madrid.) And with the news that Ronaldo is staying for atleast another season, the fans and Sir Alex Ferguson can expect that their double title treat can continue this season also.

ManU’s attacking has to furious this season if they have to beat Chelsea and Liverpool. They are in desperate need of a striker who will round-up the formation (Ronaldo-Roonay-Tevez.) Maybe Tootenham striker Dimitar Berbatov is the right choice that ManU will opt for before the transfer session ends. And this season may also witness the genius of Wayne Rooney taking the center stage this time.

Equipotential Challengers : Chelsea

Missing both Champions League and English Premier League to ManU with slight differences, Chelsea has undergone a massive change this summer to be the perfect team this season. Avram Grant’s failure to bring glory to Stamford Bridge made his way out of Chelsea. And then came the Portuguese flavor.

They signed «Big Phil» Luis Felipe Scolari as their new manager. Chelsea also bought Barcelone playmaker Deco and Jose Bosingwa from FC Porto. Rumors had it that Ronaldinho, Eto’o were to join the Blue team. But they had to settle with Didier Drogba’s extended contract and now they are not sure if Frank Lampard is committed with them for long-term. However they are equally matched favorites for this season with a strong midfield presence of Michael Ballack.

Battle for third : Arsenal

Arsenal saw a big change in the team formation as Jens Lehmann, Mathieu Flamini, Alesander Hleb and Gilberto Silva left the club. Their replacement for Hleb is French international Samir Nasri. Welsh teenage Aaron Ramsey’s sign is a big step for manager Arsene Wenger.

Midfield is still a challenge for the manager. Cesc Fabregas needs a good companion in the segment for the team to be a consistent and good performing team. Emmanuel Adebayor remains the key player for the team. This season they have to play really hard to secure their third spot. Truth be told, any title win is still a mile away, but with miracles happening all around, they need a lot of luck.

Waiting for History : Liverpool

It is always hard to write them at the end of any list. Because they were once the king of kings. Liverpool is still looking to end their 18 year long for the title. The difference this season could be Robbie Keane, their new 24 million pound striker from Tottenham Hotspur. This makes their forward (along with Fernando Torres) a lethal one. But the team as a whole needs to play their 200 percent if they can expect of any title this season.

Whose our money on : ManU are still the best in the game. But soccer is not about one team and that makes it a interesting sport to watch. So support your team (whichever) and enjoy the game more than anything else.

Real Madrid’s New Signing – A Profile of Cristiano Ronaldo

As if going to a match at the Bernabéu Stadium to watch Real Madrid wasn’t a big enough attraction anyway, the club has now gone and smashed the world transfer record to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to La Liga.

A staggering £80 million has gone to Manchester United to acquire the World Player of the Year – a sum that the Madrid club consider to be great value for money, considering the skill that the player possesses on the pitch. And, of course, the moneymaking potential he brings off it.

Footballers, of course, always polarise opinion. Fans of one club are notoriously reluctant to praise players from a bitter rival; preferring to promote their own team members. I remember last season, Marca, Real Madrid’s mouthpiece, for several weeks proclaiming that Arjen Robben could statistically be shown to be a far better player than Lionel Messi, for example.

Few polarise opinions quite so much as Cristiano Ronaldo, though. Whilst many are prepared to acknowledge that he is currently the world’s best player, fewer people are willing to say equally positive things about the man himself. This despite Sir Alex Ferguson publicly stating that he’d love the player to return to Old Trafford one day and for univseral appreciation that he has spent hours on the training pitches honing his skills. Why is it that so many football supporters want to criticise Ronaldo for ‘diving’ and histrionics? Let’s face it, he’s hardly the first footballer to try to get penalties when slightly nudged in the box or to throw a tantrum when substitued, is he?

Famously born in 1985 on the beautiful island of Madeira, in Funchal, the capital city, Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro is the youngest of four children. It says much about his parents that Ronaldo gained his name because of the fact that Ronald Reagan was his father’s favourite actor, apparently! Readers are invited to insert their own chimpanzee jokes at this stage. Playing amateur football from the age of eight, he then went across to mainland Portugal after signing for Sporting Lisbon. It was in the friendly against Manchester United that marked the refurbishment of the team’s stadium in preparation for Euro 2004, that Ronaldo first impressed the manager of Sporting’s opponents that day, Sir Alex Ferguson – who then went on to sign the player for over £12 million when he was just 18 years old.

This was a big gamble on such an inexperienced youngster, but one which repaid Ferguson’s faith in the player’s undoubted talents. Ronaldo, initially criticised as being something of a ‘show pony’ by many observers, developed into an impressive goal scoring and goal-making phenomenon. During his time at Manchester he helped United win the Premier League title for three consecutive years and also the European Champions’ League. He was transformed from being a slightly frail looking teenager into a strong, athletic player who, despite the attention he receives from defenders, misses few games through injury.

His seemingly inflammatory behaviour towards Wayne Rooney must have made life difficult for him at Old Trafford for a time – as did his pleadings to leave during and after the 2008 European Championships. But not once did his enormous self-belief waver and he soon won back the support of fans and team-mates alike. And as for the opposing fans booing him – well, like many great players, Ronaldo seems to be inspired by it rather than intimidated.

Cristiano Ronaldo has nothing left to prove on the football pitch. He’s won everything as an individual – World Player of the Year, Ballon d’Or, PFA Player of the Year, etc, etc. And, although the Portuguese national team that he now captains is going through a comparatively sticky patch, his impact on the teams he represents is always second to none.

All that remains for him is to play for the club he supported as a child and for whom his mother Dolores clearly wanted him to sign. Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo are obviously made for each other – he looks very much at home in the all white strip and the full stadium that greeted his public unveiling showed how much the Madrid public yearned for his signing. Now we have to find out whether he can have the same impact on Madrid’s fortunes as he did on Manchester United’s. It might be a bit more difficult – but it’s going to be fun watching.

The Industrial Revolution and Rochdale

Rochdale is a market town that is located in the Pennines. It is just ten miles from Manchester and forms part of the metropolitan Borough of Rochdale. Rochdale was originally an ecclesiastical parish and did not receive a Royal charter until 1251. It quickly became prominent as a center for woolen trade in northern England and was known for its many wealthy merchants.

In the 19th century Rochdale was an important mill town. It was a boomtown from the Industrial Revolution. Much of Rochdales success can be linked to the Rochdale canal, which is one of the largest broad canals in the UK. This canal made it possible to easily transport wool, cotton and coal to and form the surrounding areas. Rochdale maintained its prominence in the textile industry until the 20th century.

Rochdale town hall originally had a beautiful and tall clock tower. That tower was burnt down just 12 years after construction finished and since has been replaced by a much shorter tower. The traditional emblems of Rochdale can be found on the front of town hall. The widest bridge in Europe in front of the town hall as this is the path of the Roch River.

Rochdale is easy to reach due to its proximity to Manchester as well as the many railways that provide transportation. The George Stephenson Summit Railway was just reopened in 2003. It is possible to reach Manchester and Leeds taking the Manchester to Rochdale via Oldham Lane line as well as the Manchester Metrolink tram. Many of the Manchester public transportation has been extended to the center of Rochdale with completion estimated for 2012.

If you are looking for a fun afternoon then Rochdale is home to two professional sports teams, the Rochdale hornets and the Rochdale AFC. These two rugby teams have been playing in Rochdale since the beginning of the 1900s. The Rochdale Hornets is actually one of twenty-two teams that were part of the first every Northern rugby Football Union formed in 1895, therefore the Hornets are one of the world’s first rugby teams.

English Premier League Roundup

Tevez and Bellamy scored two each for the visitors while Frank Lampard scored both goals for Chelsea, the last from the penalty spot in injury time with Chelsea reduced to nine men. Chelsea’s lead at the top of the table is now just one point from Manchester United with Arsenal just a further two points behind. Tottenham sit in fourth position after a fortunate 2-1 home win over Everton who pushed hard in the second half and were unfortunate not to get at least a point as they dominated the second half, scoring once and coming close to equalizing on a number of occasions.

Liverpool kept up the pressure in the four-way race for the last Champion’s League spot with a deserved 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers in a hard-fought match with Rovers seemingly more interested in fulfilling their Manager, Sam Allardyce’s bullying tactics as they fouled their way to five yellow cards and were lucky not to have a couple of players sent off. Fernando Torres marked his return to the starting line-up with a goal, while Liverpool’s captain and talisman, Steven Gerrard, scored the other. Arsenal comfortably beat Stoke City 3-0 with Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross seeing red for a tackle that broke Aaron Ramsey’s leg in two places. Shawcross trudged of the field wiping tears of remorse from his face with his soccer uniform, clearly distraught at badly injuring a fellow professional in a mistimed challenge.

Ramsey has since undergone surgery and it has been suggested that it will be at least six months before he will return to action. In other matches Birmingham and Bolton ground out 1-0 home wins over Wigan and Wolves respectively, while Portsmouth upset Burnley 2-1 away. On Sunday Fulham and Sunderland drew 0-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Carling Cup Final

Sir Alex Ferguson won his 34th trophy as manager of Manchester United with a come from behind 2-1 win over Aston Villa in the Carling Cup final at Wembley on Sunday. Gareth Barry scored from the penalty spot in the fifth minute but the lead lasted only seven minutes as Michael Owen swept the ball into the net from the edge of the penalty area. Owen made way for Wayne Rooney before the half, succumbing to a hamstring injury, allowing Rooney to head home the winner with sixteen minutes to play.

Switching Soccer Uniforms – Transfer Gossip

Chelsea are lining up a $30mil offer for Liverpool and Spain goalkeeper, Pepe Reina. Reina has been in outstanding form this season and many believe he is now the number one keeper in the league. A move seems unlikely as Reina has repeatedly expressed his desire to stay at Liverpool for years to come. Arsenal have tied up their free transfer for Bordeaux’s Morrocan star, Marouane Chamakh, who is ready to sign a four-year deal to play for the Gunners. Michael Owen, Nani, Gabriel Obertan and Owen Hargreaves are set to be sold over the summer by Manchester United in a clean-out designed to raise money for the debt-ridden club.
