What Happened In The UK In 1996?

Breaking 1996 down into the biggest news, sports and entertainment events; here’s what happened…

Two tragedies hit the hearts of Britons in 1996, the nation’s sympathies going out to the people of Dunblane and Manchester. In Dunblane, a crazed gunman went on a shooting spree in at a local infant school, killing an entire class and their teacher. Later in the year, as a direct response to those ill-fated events, the Government announced that it would be outlawing almost all handguns in the UK.

In Manchester, a huge bomb devastated its busy central shopping area just as it was filling up with eager Saturday shoppers. Police managed to start an evacuation before it blew up but scores of people were still killed or injured in the blast. Such was the damage caused, that the episode led to a total regeneration of Manchester city centre.

Also hitting the news in ’96 was the introduction of the first genetically modified (or GM) food to go on sale in British supermarkets. Modified tomato puree was the cause of all the fuss with some critics dubbing it a «Frankenstein food».

The world of sport was dominated by England’s hosting of the European football championships (Euro ’96). The England v Scotland group stage match drew much attention with Gazza’s wonder goal eventually stealing the win for the home team. Cheered on by home support, the ‘Three Lions’ made it all the way to the semi-finals, the nation going football crazy as it looked as if England were really going to win a major tournament for the first time since ’66, then, as really should have been expected, they lost on penalties to Germany.

Entertainment wise, carrot topped Chris Evans re-invented the chat show format with his hit show ‘TFI Friday’.Presenting celebrity gossip, the hippest bands and lad friendly guests, this unscripted, chaotic program briefly made Evans the most sought after man on TV. Over on the BBC, a group of thirty-something lawyers were gaining huge ratings; ‘This Life’ being a bit like the American ‘Friends’ but with much more ‘bad’ behaviour and saucy goings on.

The big screen was blessed with one of the jewels of the British film-making crown, ‘Trainspotting’. Despite featuring heroin, needles, vomit and disgusting toilet bowls, this was the coolest thing of the year and took Ewan McGregor from nowhere to ‘Star Wars’. The more family friendly film of 1996 was ‘Toy Story’; it being the first feature length movie ever to be animated entirely by computer. The results were quite stunning and people flocked to see ‘Woody’ (a pull-string cowboy) and ‘Buzz Lightyear’ (a high-tech space ranger) battle it out to become little Andy’s favourite toy.

Football Manager Profile – Arsene Wenger

With the benefit of hindsight, the Evening Standard headline writer who dreamt up the ‘Arsène Who?’ headline back in September, 1996 must feel pretty silly now.

There can be few football club managers anywhere in the world who are as identified with their team and their style of play as Arsenal’s Arsène Wenger. In a profession in which staying in a post for more than two years should qualify you for a testimonial match, the urbane Frenchman has now been at Arsenal for nearly 13 years. In any other country – that is one with no Sir Alex Ferguson in it – he would be by far the longest-serving manager.

During that time, Arsenal have won the Premier League on three occasions and the FA Cup four times – as well as twice reaching the Champions League final and being runner-up in the UEFA Cup. And, during the whole of his spell with the north London club, Wenger has produced teams that play football with real style sometimes breathtaking beauty.

Arsène Wenger belongs to that tradition of managers who were never great players and therefore took to coaching comparatively early in their lives. With degrees in both Engineering and Economics, and with fluency in Spanish and German as well as French and English, education was very much a priority for him as a young man and he didn’t become a professional with RC Strasbourg – his home town – until 1978, when he was 29 years old. He only played for the first team on twelve occasions – in their title winning season of 1978/79, including one match in the UEFA Cup.

Wenger’s first managerial post was with Nancy, when he was 34, and he followed this relatively unsuccessful stint by joining AS Monaco, ironically the team he made his first team debut against for Strasbourg, in 1987. It was here that his career really started to flourish – winning the French league in his first season (1988) and the cup in 1991. He also took players of the calibre of Glenn Hoddle, Jurgen Klinsmann and George Weah to play in the Principality. Always wanting to broaden his education and horizons, however, he then went over to the Japanese J League to manage Grampus Eight for an 18 month spell which brought the Emperor’s Cup to the club. In 1995, he became the first overseas manager to be awarded the Manager of the Year Trophy.

As soon as he joined Arsenal, Arsène Wenger set about transforming the face, not only of the Highbury club, but, indirectly, all of English football. By completely transforming the training methods and introducing totally new dietary requirements – in addition to using a variety of coaches and experts unheard of in English football at that time – clubs throughout the country began to re-evaluate their structures. It helped his cause, needless to say, when Arsenal won the League and FA Cup double in only his second season in charge.

Gradually, Wenger was able to change what had been a predominantly cautious Arsenal side into a vibrant attacking force, without losing the ability to defend when necessary. The greatest achievement of his Premier League career – and one that will always be regarded as one of the finest feats ever – was to go the whole of the 2003/04 campaign without suffering a single defeat.

Key to all of Arsenal’s success under Wenger has been his talent at bringing young players through into the first team and signing relatively unknown players and grooming them into world superstars. Patrick Viera, Nicolas Anelka and Emmanuel Adebayor were all transformed at Arsenal. Players such as Anelka were bought for £500,000 and later sold for over £22 million!

The recent injury to striker Robin Van Persie, who had previously been enjoying great success this season, has put the onus on the Arsenal manager to find a similar player during the January transfer window. To outsiders, it does seem as if the comparatively long period since the team’s last trophy – the FA Cup in 2005 – is perhaps beginning to put pressure, much of it self-imposed, on the manager. Famous for not having seen controversial incidents involving his players, his recent uncharacteristic outburst at a Press Conference when asked a question about Theo Walcott’s fitness was followed by some strange comments about Didier Drogba not doing much in the league game in which he completely dominated the Arsenal defence. Finally, after the League Cup Quarter Final defeat at Manchester City, Wenger took off down the Eastlands’ tunnel without shaking Mark Hughes’ hand after a little ‘spat’ between them during the game.

Despite this, at times, ungallant attitude, Arsène Wenger continues to produce football teams that can delight the neutral spectator because of their passing, movement and fluency. Already Arsenal’s longest serving manager, Arsène Wenger, O.B.E. and Freeman of the Borough of Islington, will surely bring another trophy or two back to north London in the near future.

Basics of Football Betting

Football betting is not easy. There are so many things that are concerned about it that you will really find it difficult to understand. The types of bets are 90-minute bet, single bet, double bet, accumulator bet, trebles, etc. these are simple to play than the Yankees, Trixies, Lucky 15’s, Correct Score Parents, etc. read all the points to understand what are they.

90 minutes betting

The most common form of betting is this one. It is generally about the team that will win the match. One can also predict a draw but to win the bet the game has to be a draw. Thus, there are three betting outcomes a win, lose or a draw. You have a single wager in which you have to predict the chances.

Double Bet

A double wager is similar to a single 90-minute bet game. In this one is allowed to wager on two different football matches. This will count your winning chances in the final place.

Treble Bet

Like the double wager, it requires picking three teams instead of two in the double wager. If all these teams win, that is if you bet for winning, then that would make you win.

Accumulator betting

When there are more than three teams, it is called an accumulator wager. Thus a four team, five teams, six team wager is called an accumulator bet or three-fold, four-fold, six-fold bet respectively. The odds of all these selections are multiplied and then your winning amount is determined. The risk is that any one of the team not matching your prediction can make you lose as a whole.

Saturday afternoon accumulator bet

An accumulator wager is common on Saturday afternoons. There can be numerous teams in the wager. The more the number of teams the more is the winning amount. But the difficulty of winning is also greater.

Long odds accumulator bet

In this kind, you can wager around a lower amount say £2 and then stand a chance of winning around £100, which is a huge amount in comparison to your betting price.

Short Odds Accumulator bet

If you are betting on the famous teams like Barcelona, Manchester City, Real Madrid and the like and if they are playing with average to low teams then you stand out a chance to win. Thus if you are betting a win for all your 5 teams then you might get £6 for a £2 bet for at odds of 3/1.

Hence, it is very much evident that the betting can be simple as well as complicated. It will all depend on the bet you want to place.
