French league problem is that its full of decent teams but not decent enough to make a mark, so top to bottom, i would say it's far superior to portugal and Netherlands but hasn't got that big 3 clubs like they do. They could have them but clubs like Lyon, Marseille and Monaco always under achieve domestically. French clubs sort of do well in europe and get pretty deep but just need that extra something. Hopefully the sleeping giants wake up and get more competitive because same old teams winning every comp is getting a bit jarring

I live in France and I can’t name a single player in Ligue 1 and most people here don’t care at all about Ligue 1, Bordeaux is one of the biggest cities in France and the club just went bankrupt. Everyone here dreams of the Prem and La Liga that’s all

It goes down to the salary average. In Ligue 1 it’s lower than the average of an English Championship player. So no way can clubs in France keep their players if the salary difference is that big.

It will get worse. At one point the Spanish clubs cannot compete anymore. Italy is also much weaker than before. The CL quarter finals are more or less the same every year. There is no European football anymore.

Long story short on why French clubs are not higher up: money.

Longer answer: in France there is an authority (DNCG) where every club has to account for their budget at the end of each season. They are not allowed to show any kind of deficit. If that is the case, they are automatically sanctioned to lower leagues, or worse. So most of the French clubs rely at the end of each season on selling their best players all the time and TV rights to maintain their budget and keep being profitable (if not just afloat). The only club going through that annual test serenely is PSG, as you can guess. You get the picture now.
A club like, say, Barcelona with their current situation would not have passed the annual test YEARS AGO and would have gone to Ligue 2 (or below) as a result of financial sanction. You get the drill? They can’t invest too much or burn money like clubs from the EPL for example.

1. Lower supporter numbers
2. Badly ran clubs
3. Even worse ran national league
all of which explain why there's less money
(and 4, attendances kinda dropped after they banned beer in the stadiums.. What's the point of going if we cant get drunk?)

I believe players pay much more tax in France than they do in other countries, so they can keep more of their salary in other countries, meaning the French clubs have to pay even more if the player wants to take home the same amount as they would in the PL.

I knew from day one the best League’s in the world are the ones that can offer good money and superficial hype and broadcasting. EPL is EPL today because of foreign players all over the world. Not necessarily much on local players

All the good players are recruited by the European Big 4, which means lesser championships, including France, can’t keep their best players for very long, so the Big 4 keeps getting bigger and the others are doomed to stagnate (unless they’re literally bought out by a prince like PSG)… it’s a vicious circle.

We mostly have the 1995 Bosman ruling for that.

That's no excuse. Since the competition. French teams were just terrible. The English teams were winning with British players. The Spanish were doing it with Spanish players, the Portuguese with Portuguese players, the Dutch with Dutch players, and even a Serbian team in Red star Belgrade with yugoslav players The french just always sucked in the competition. Money is a relative new commodity to the game. We're talking about clubs who are well over a hundred years old. The Dutch league produced three winners in Feyronood, Ajax, and PSV Eindhoven. Did they have money in their leagues? The french teams were always terrible in Europe. Ajax in the 80s and 90s were still supplying European teams' talent yet still completed and won trophies in Europe. France has no excuse. Their club teams are just terrible.

UEFFA should enforce minimum on sell percentages say 30% to recoup development costs to nations if a player is on sold Example CR7 sporting to United to Real Madrid United keep 70% sporting get 30%

Agreed many times. We have to be honest. Premier league the richest one. La Liga, the second one and on and on. French league, "poor" comparing to those
Simple as that.
Rea Betis, which is a like mid table team bought Ferkin foe about €40 mills, for example

I have been explaining what Thierry just said for decades to farmer league comments!
Imagine if France kept most of their best players and grabbed a good number of EPL players!
The farmer league would be north of the channel!

The Dutch don’t really compare because they don’t have many great players today… besides Virgil, they don’t have any top tier players. Simons isn’t the generational talent he was predicted to be and Depay is what he is…
